Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

3 years ago Peterson could have had dang near any job in the nation, now he's going to leave Boise for Washington? I hope he's better at playing the stock market than he is at deciding when to cash in on his coaching popularity.

Disagree - Peterson could have many jobs but wants something close to home, not with an obsessive media that he still feels comfortable in and I think UW is a great fit. They have great facilities, little competition for NW kids outside of Oregon and has a cupboard of pretty good talent that Sark left. It fits what he wants and is a school that he can take to heights they haven't seen for some time.

Plus, I love seeing these Boise fans break down like this.

If Peterson takes the UW job, and I still think that's a big if (I've seen the reports, but there have been last second changes of heart before), I don't think he's going to succeed on the level everyone expects. Every Boise coach, every single one to a man, be it as a HC or a coordinator, has been a failure after leaving the cupcake Boise schedule behind. I don't think Peterson will be any different.

I think it was a smart move on his part. He probably knows that he'll never approach the level of success at a major program that he has at truck driver u. If he's going to leave Boise, it's better that he does it for a 2nd tier program like UW. Maybe they'll be happy with 7-8 wins a year and the occasional run at a conference with 9-10 wins. I think that's his ceiling.

Gentlemen, that '2nd tier' program has as many Rose Bowl wins as Ohio State.
Indeed they do. They're a solid program historically. But they've been irrelevant since 2001. They certainly aren't a football power anymore. Maybe Peterson surprises me and does it, but given Boysee coaches track records after leaving the potato farm, I wouldn't bet on it.

Washington has really lost the battle with Oregon in that particular area. I don't think that both programs can maintain success at the same time.

Yep. But, I think Oregon is going to take a step backwards under Helfrich. If Peterson is anywhere near as good as his record at Boysee, they might be able to give them a run in the PAC-North. I'm not convinced he is, but I don't think Oregon's gonna maintain the success they had under Chip Kelly with Helfrich.

I can remember people saying the same thing about Alabama, Texas & USC. Even the biggest programs occasionally have entire lost decades, but they almost never fall off the map permanently. UW still has a top level infrastructure, all it really needs is better coaching hires. That is what has killed it over the past decade.

Well, I'd argue that UW doesn't even belong in the conversation with those schools. They've been good for the occasional run of good-to-great seasons (early-60s, 81-84, 90-92, 2000), but their good periods have typically occurred during PAC-10 down spells. Pretty good history, but they've never had sustained runs of success like bammer, texas, or usc. They were a consistently solid program from about 1977-2001, but mostly in the top 15-20 range, with some better runs mentioned above.

...and UW has been to exactly 1 BCS bowl, whereas OSU has been to 9. Why not start talking about other powerhouse historical programs like Syracuse and Minnesota?

Well, some of us remember life before the BCS. Comparing Washington to Minnesota is pretty ridiculous. Nor is it fair to compare any Pac-12 team on BCS appearances. The Pac hardly ever gets more than one team a year into the BCS. They don't travel well, and College Football in general doesn't garner the same level of interest as it does in the South and Midwest.

It's also pretty silly to compare them to tOSU in general, but I am biased, so...

Yeah. Like I said, they were a pretty consistently solid program for 25 years until about 2001. They've just struggled to find somebody to live up to Don James since he left. Sark made them decent after the Gilbertson/Willingham debacles, but seems like he's had trouble getting over that 7-8 win hump. I actually kind of like UW. They're a much less distasteful alternative to USC/Nike on the west coast. I'd like to see Peterson do well there.

Rose Bowl appearances are an interesting barometer. From 1978 thru 1993 Washington played in six.

In the past 16 years OSU has been one of the dominant teams in CFB - and has played in precisely one (largely of course due to the BCS system).
