Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

There's a lot of pretty good openings this year, moreso than usual...

Florida
Tennessee
UCLA
Aggy
Arkansas (presumably)
Arizona State (possibly)
Mississippi
Nebraska

...and not a lot of coaches to go around. That would seem to make it likely that there'll be a surprise or two.

Who are the "hot" names?

Kelly
Frost
Venables
Pruitt
Campbell
Norvell

Plus, I don't think either Sumlin or Bert will be out of work long.

The name that keeps popping up that surprised me is Jimbo Fisher. If he goes elsewhere, then you also have FSU in the mix.

Only jobs I really like on that list are ASU and UCLA. A lot of delusional places that think they should be contenders and just won't (UF, UT)... or impossible to win consistently w/o overt cheating (Miss, Arky, Aggy). Those places can be great if you're just looking for high-risk high-reward for 3 years of $3mil+ paychecks on the premise that your career, even as a Coordinator, may be flushed down the toilet. Otherwise pass.

I'll be eating a big plate of crow on Frost. Didn't think he'd end up at Nebraska.

Nebraska isn't the sexy hire, but fan base is ready to settle for Division Championships I think. Stop getting embarassed by Wisconsin every year... stop losing to shitty schools. Accept the Bo Pellini 9-win records without the angry outbursts.

Florida is a delusional boilerplate, recruiting is national, and despite being in the Sunshine State -- location is actually pure jorts hillbilly country. Location wise, UCF is a lot nicer.
He's born a Midwest kid so the downfalls of Midwest will just be "home" .. and very likely be able to leverage UCF connections to score some 3* sleepers from FL up to Lincoln.

This makes most sense to me. And if he's successful at UNL, there will always be opportunity to step up to a real contender if he wants to later on.
What surprises me is LSU's situation. That's a primetime location even if they do suck now... recruiting hotbed... only big school in-State... and fanbase reaching a point where they might have some patience with a hot hand.

It's the most football pea-brain thing out there. Fanbases just flip their sh!t for his name, with 0 logic.
Take away his 34-14 three year run from 2000-02, and he was 61-67 over his other eight seasons. His entire "mystique" is winning a SB after taking over an absolutely loaded Bucs team in 2002. Things went rapidly downhill after that season. In fact, he never won another postseason game after beating the Raiders (one of the worst SB teams ever) in that SB.

Now, after being out of coaching for almost a decade, and with 5 years total of college coaching experience 26 years ago (never rising higher than WR coach), he's going to come in and turn around a dead program? Yeah, okay.

That's all assuming he would want to leave a well paid, cushy job in the booth to pander to alums/boosters and chase around 16-18 year old kids.

It's literally only about him being a "football guy" because people hear him talk like a tough guy on MNF.

(By the way, I have nothing against Gruden)

Re: Breakdown: Jimbo Fisher’s new contract extension with Florida State
Dec 19, 2016
Florida State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox released Monday a contract extension for Head Football Coach Jimbo Fisher through the 2024 season. Fisher’s new salary: $5.5M, making him one of the five highest-paid coaches in the country. This is an increase of $250K annually. The number is the same throughout the deal, as it is about guaranteed money and not annual raises.

The only way this makes sense is if FSU has been on "double secret probation" with the NCAA and is about to get hit with yet more violations that impose severe sanctions.
