Coach of The Year?

I voted "other" and would vote for Mack Brown.
#1 their defense is much better coached- due to the new DC obviously, but who hired him in the first place, and Brown does more coaching with his defense than JT does with ours.
Also, they beat us on our home field - that's bigger than finally blowing out OK. I was amazed at the poise Texas showed on both sides of the ball that night and all season long, really. That comes from coaching.

Joe Pa just doesn't really "coach" to the extent that other HCs do anymore, or I would vote for him. Maybe his Recruiting Coordinator should win the award.

With that much talent, anyone with an IQ over 75 should be able to get to the Rose Bowl. "Not choking" should not merit any mention in Coach of the Year discussions.
Then Pete Carroll shouldn't be up there. For all of the talk about the coordinators lost, they still have as much offensive talent on one team as I've seen in a while.

He didn't just "not choke" he has had his team absolutely destroy every team but one team. Yes he has talent, talent that he brought in, and talent that he used correctly. Mack deserves to at least be on the list, especially if Carroll is on the list. I think this is by far Mack's best year of coaching yet, and he has had some pretty good seasons.

So while I disagree with him not deserving mention, I also don't know if he is the coach of the year. I would vote for Shula as he has gotten that team back together, and started brinigng that program back after the crap that it has gone through over the past few years.

I think Chizik deserves the Broyles award again.

It boggles my mind that folks would even consider voting for coaches that have the top two talent pools in the country on their teams (USC and Texas)...a frickin' chimp could coach them to a great season. Paterno took a team that was barely expected to crack the top half of the conference and made them a top-5 team, and two seconds away from being the team challenging USC and Texas for the title game. And if anyone truly feels that Joe Paterno isn't the guy calling the shots on the sideline, I've got a flying saucer to sell you.

When considering who should win Coach of the Year, you look at three things:

1. What did the team have at the start of the year?

2. What was expected of that team?

3. How much higher than expectations did the team perform?

Look at those questions and tell me how any other coach listed has put his team higher than expectations than Paterno did Penn State.

1. What did the team have at the start of the year?
ND - not much, an ok QB and a good RB
PSU - a suffocating defense, and some flashy recruits (including the #1 guy, DWill)

2. What was expected of that team?
ND - Weis would do a little better, but still get rolled by Michigan, USC, Tennessee and probably MSU and Purdue as well. Struggle thru the other games
PSU - They weren't expected to go 9-1, but there were a decent amount of analysts that thought PSU would bounce back and win 6-7 games.

3. How much higher than expectations did the team perform?
ND - Who gave them any chance against USC before the season?
PSU - We all gave them a chance against OSU before the season.

I realize Weis is hated around these parts, but he overachieved in a similar fashion... b/c I think his team was thought to have far less.

I voted for Spurrier, his talent level is just plain awful.

I voted Weis, but wouldn't have any problems with saying Paterno as well.

I second that... Charlie Weis has done an incredible job turning around the ND program and turning Brady Quinn (Dublin product, son) into a top-tier QB. Personally, I'd much rather see JoePa win because he's a Big 10 coach, and he made a miraculous season, after he was deemed "finished."
