Coach of The Year?

It boggles my mind that folks would even consider voting for coaches that have the top two talent pools in the country on their teams (USC and Texas)...a frickin' chimp could coach them to a great season. Paterno took a team that was barely expected to crack the top half of the conference and made them a top-5 team, and two seconds away from being the team challenging USC and Texas for the title game. And if anyone truly feels that Joe Paterno isn't the guy calling the shots on the sideline, I've got a flying saucer to sell you.

When considering who should win Coach of the Year, you look at three things:

1. What did the team have at the start of the year?

2. What was expected of that team?

3. How much higher than expectations did the team perform?

Look at those questions and tell me how any other coach listed has put his team higher than expectations than Paterno did Penn State.
Saying that USC and Texas have the top 2 talent pools in the country is, while not laughable, certainly arguable. Miami, Ohio State, scUM and even Florida State have an incredible amount of talent on their teams.
Texas was expected by many to lose to Ohio State and Oklahoma, and they didn't.
Add to that they have been annihilating everyone else on their schedule and I can certainly argue they are beating expectations. Just because they have a lot of talent doesn't mean they are going to live up to it. It takes a coach to do that.

P.S. how much for the saucer? :p

Spurrier, he's coaching a team that should have been lucky to win 3 games.
Spurrier is a top college football coach, but he's gotten the benefit of debuting in the SEC during a down period. SC beating both Tennessee and Florida in the same season was a fluke, not the beginning of a trend or the work of a great coach. The other three teams that SC has beaten during the current five game winning streaks were Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Arkansas. The Gamecocks were taken behind the woodshed by Auburn, Alabama and lost at Georgia, which is a truer indication of where the program is really at.

Before the season started, I would have said they'd beat UK and Vandy and maybe a non conference game or two.

They got crushed by Auburn but they only lost to Georgia by 2 on the road 17-15.

I never said they were a powerhouse but they are definitely an overachieving squad who Spurrier himself said before the season that bowl eligibility would be considered a remarkable season.
