CNNSI's Top 10 Performers from 10/15

I like Troy Smith as much as anybody but didn't he have a fumble?

Also, two of his TD passes had more to do with his receivers breaking tackles than him throwing great passes.

I'd nominate Ashton Youboty before Smith in this instance.

he stepped up when we needed it, but IMO he's definitely not deserving of a top-10 performer award. He also lost the ball twice when his back hit the ground (once over the middle and once on the final PR IIRC). The lost fumble was actually the backline's fault for not helping him field that one.

People are saying Troy isn't that good...he is being coached where to look and just throw it there. So my question is...in a game like this where he does this well...if everyone wants to say it wasn't him, then was it the coaches? It can't be ALL the receivers. Somebody still needs to get them the ball. Somebody is responsable for his great numbers and 4TDs. And i'm sure some of you will say it's the crappy defense of MSU...but he didn't put up numbers like that against SDSU...a team with even worse defense. MSU is 7th in both total and scoring defense, so it's not like they are bottem dwellers. They have a better defense than Minnesota and Northwestern will (our two toughest games left before scUM).

Do you think he deserves it over Youboty?

My reasoning for posting that was I think he is more deserving of the accolade than Smith because of those kind of stats for a receiver are more rare than the kind of stats Smith put up at the quarterback position... but I do agree he doesn't deserve a top-10 performance because of the mistakes that were made.

I'll make sure to include my reasoning next time.

I think the reason people dont give Troy very much credit for his performance is a majority of his yards came on 4 passes totalling almost 200 yards. And of those 4 passes, 3 went for beyond 50 yards, and a majority of those yards were YAC by the wide receivers. The one pass where a majority of the yardage came through the air was Holmes 39 yard reception. So yes Smith is responsible for getting the receivers the ball, but if the receivers wouldnt have been able to break tackles, his numbers would have been alot less impressive then they actually are,

I was at that game, and even though Troy was 10/15 he easily could have been 15/15. More than one WR was wide open every pass play. The one were he rolled out and threw it out of bounds made me sick. Ginn was wide open and on the same side Troy was rolling to. He had plenty of time. Yet all he did was eye down Hamby, saw he was covered, and got rid of the ball. Also the underthrow to Ginn was bad, and the throw where Gonzo was wide open and he underthrew the ball by 5 yards was terrible. The WR's made him look good, along with the worst secondary in the Big Ten.

The yayhoos who ranked Smith as #10 player of the week simply looked at the stats and saw: "10 of 15 passing (67%), 249 yards, no INTs, 3TDs, 272.1 QB rating". They obviously didn't see the game.

I agree with Mil here, Smith didn't have a gamebreaking performance. He had some plays where the receivers broke some tackles against a sloppy Michigan St. defense. Carpenter did though........he was simply amazing on Saturday........probably one of the best performances by a linebacker that I've seen in a long time. Honestly, I think he was the biggest factor in our win on Saturday, hence why he was National Defensive player of the week for his performance against MSU.
