Cleveland Indians Thread of Malaise (2014 Season)

I think the injuries have been nagging him all year. You don't typically see this kind of dropoff in production from a player in his mid-20s unless there's some underlying issues going on. Hopefully he can heal up this offseason and we see a return to form in 2015. I like Kipnis, and watching him play, you can see the effort is there.
The problem I have with Kipnis's tweet is that for $8 mil/season I would putfforth quite a bit of effort also. Maybe even more. I am getting tired of professional athletes making excuses when they are getting paid quite a sum of money to do their job. I agree with the rest of your summary regarding this shitty team.

Since being inserted back into the rotation six weeks ago, Carrasco has the following numbers...

8 Starts
54 Innings
5-1 W-L
38 Hits
2 HR
7/7 Runs/ER
7 Walks
59 Ks
1.17 ERA
0.833 WHIP
.188 BAA

WTF?

Amazing what guys can do when they're basically pitching for their lives...or at least for a spot in next year's rotation. Let's hope he doesn't follow the Ubaldo model.

I mean he was showing signs a few years ago before blowing out his arm. But he's a prime candidate to follow the typical Indians model, which means he be 9-11 next year with a 4.67 era. Meanwhile some other surprise guy will look good in the rotation, and everyone will say what if....
Exactly. How many times have we been teased by a pitcher over the years only to see him end up a pile of mediocre? Started with Jarrett Wright, the benchmark for teases.

Ok, first things first, if you were teased by Jarrett Wright in any real way... that's your own fault. He managed to go 12-10 with an ERA of 4.70 in his best season with the tribe on a team that prolly scored 900 runs in 1998 (edit, my bad, 847). I get the fun of the '97 post season but, he walked out and threw fastballs, which was more fun to watch than Doc Gooden's arm falling off.

Having said that... back to Carrasco. Much like Ubaldo. He's fucking nuts. But they're a different kind of nuts. Ubaldo is the "OMG what if I throw a fastball that doesn't touch the black of the plate and someone hits it 450 feet" nuts while Carrasco is "Why am I fucking with this clown, I should just earhole him" nuts. Sorry, their respective "nuts" lose translation from the Spanish... its much catchier in their native head voices.

Having said that, Ubaldo has a much longer resume (of both nuts and brilliant pitching), I don't know if the Tribe should bring Carrasco back or not, but stuff isn't a problem, never has been and personally, I keep good arms when the price is right. If they feel like they've gotten through to the crazy part.

Now, if the expectation is that he's gonna pitch like a #2 for a whole season, you'll probably be disappointed. But he's 27 there's a calculated risk to be taken. Maybe even by Carrasco.. I'd tell him "Look kid, here's what happened to Ubaldo without Callaway, you don't have that resume and you've got more Santa Muerte thoughts in your head why don't you take a cheap one year deal so you can show you can do something"

Well, it was a releatively short track record, but damn he looked like the real deal down the stretch and during that '97 postseason. Then there was Sowers' back-to-back shutouts as a rook. That's the thing, these guys don't hold up over a long period. That's why it's a tease. They usually flash their potential over a handful of games, then go in the shitter.

Funny thing is that's the default thought (player X will go to the Yankees) for everyone, myself included, but the Yankees aren't shit anymore really...he's more likely to go to the Angels or Tigers these days...or even the Dodgers or the Giants or the Red Sox. But still...fuck the Yankees. Hard.

Yeah, this isn't "The Boss's" Yankees. They'll still spend money, but the kids don't seem as willing to try to snatch up every available FA like they did 5-6 years ago.
