Cleveland Indians Thread of Malaise (2014 Season)

He was overrated.Doesn't mean he was bad. He struck out on average 142 times a year during that span. His batting average was a good yet not exactly amazing .281 during that time span. For a lead-off hitter he wasn't all that great and was not a true lead-off hitter. He was just fast. He was never all that far away from an even SO to hit ratio. Look at another memorable CF for CLE in Lofton and compare. Lofton almost always was dead even in Walks to Strike outs. Lofton almost always averaged near a 2:1 ration on hits to SO's.

Lofton and Sizemore were entirely different players. Comparing their games (especially in the differeing eras) is beyond nonsensical.

Grady, I will say he was pretty good from 05-08. I watched him play plenty though and he was over-hyped. He is just like Hafner. Wouldn't be shocked if Grady and Hafner were both on roids and then when they got off them their bodies deteriorated.

:roll1:

I'm still waiting on you to tell us what your other screen name was....

Which leads me to believe that Grady didn't do a very good job keeping in game shape and preparing etc. Perhaps he should have done a better job training rather than trying to be a teen heart throb all the time.

Not to mention, he really wasn't even that great. Very overrated bc honestly his hitting was average. Good fielder, mediocre hitter who had no business being a 1 hitter as he wasn't good at making contact a lot like a #1 would.

What the...I don't even...

SI did a profile on him in, I think, 2007. A number of GMs at that time said if they were starting a franchise from scratch and could pick any player in MLB to build around said Grady Sizemore based on his all around game with the bat, glove, and on the base paths as well as his young age and durability. No, he wasn't a .300, and he struck out, but he also walked a lot. Hit for power, doubles, triples, stole bases, and scored a ton of runs. He was one of the best all-around players in the game. To argue that is just ridiculous.

As to the steroids...I guess you could say any player that played during that era is suspect, but there's certainly no proof, and it sounds like you're just bitter he broke down. He played CF like a maniac. Was always diving for balls and crashing into walls. I'd say that is just as likely the reason as PEDs. Greg Oden's knees gave out at 21. Guess he was on steroids. Jared Sullinger's back has given him problems at the same age. Must be steroids.

AKAK-- is this guy gonna tell us he was a scout for the Tribe's farm system?

We can only hope. :slappy:

Having said that, I think I remember Sloopy 45 claiming that the Yankees were going to Trade Robinson Cano to the Indians for Sizemore and make him their CF of the future and I laughed him out of the place.

Whoops.

Maybe old HolyBuckeye10 here is the asshat who didn't pull the trigger on that deal.

Grady was good for a few seasons then got hurt every 10 minutes. Wow somebody please send this man to Cooperstown asap. He has a career BA of .262. Obviously those GM's should be glad that they didn't start a franchise around him bc he gets hurt so often. He was a good baserunner, good fielder, and decent hitter. He struck out almost twice as much as he did walk... He was solid for a few years, but you can't just ignore after 2008 like it doesn't count. It's wasn't just microfracture surgy he was getting DL'd by groin pulls and twisted ankles.

I am irritated that a guy got so much money to spend his time lounging around on the couch. Sure CLE gets some blame for keeping him around, but the man was only good for a few years. He is basically Curtis Granderson.

I stick by my statement, Grady was overrated bc he was heralded as a superstar for a long while yet the #'s don't show he was as good as a lot of ppl regarded him. He then became far too injury and a waste of money. So no I do not like Grady Sizemore. Fortunately the usual Grady has shown up in the last 2 L's against the Tribe.

Wow, we might actually be able to talk about the Indians now. To wit, hell of a run they are on...not inconsequently because Swisher and Santana have been out. When they come back, I hope Francona has the sense not to just put them in the top half of the order every game, despite what is actually going on during this streak.

Granderson was never a 30/30 guy and has hit for more power over his career. And you're using hindsight to make an argument for something that was going on before he was getting injured - it skews the context and would fit in perfectly on ESPiN. Way to go. :roll1:

Have Kluber finish off the sweep and we're back at .500 and at worst 4 1/2 back, not too shabby for as inconsistent as they've been, Salazar being a bust this year, Masterson looking more like a 6th starter instead of an ace, and a torrid run of injuries to Santana, Bourn, Swisher, Kipnis, etc.

It will be very interesting to see if Francona puts Swisher and Santana back in the lineup immediately if the Indians keep winning 2 out of three games. They certainly are playing better without those two guys. It will also be interesting to see how Masterson performs in his next outing compared to what he did a couple nights ago.

I was scared to death last night when Francona brought in Hagadone. He is best left in the bullpen.

Not if you ask the bullpen phones he isn't...
