Cleveland Indians (2019 Thread of Indifference)

I totally agree with your thought that the Tribe will try to find an improvement at 2B next year. But your decimal place is off. No way they’ll pay anything near $10M for Kip or any other 2B in 2020. Will be under $1.0.

And after what they’ve just gone through with Jose the past 11 months I don’t see them messing around with a position change for Jose. In the unlikely event that Jones is ML ready in 2020 (remember he’s only played about 16 games at AA so far), he’ll be somewhere other than 3B.
You might be right. Perhaps they will find someone else to promote from the minors or trade to get a Kip replacement who is on the cusp of the majors, similar to how they added Mercado. I am not sure any of their minor league infield prospects are that highly thought of. At some level, it would be a disappointment to simply promote from within when they free up $14 million in salary, if in fact they don't spend at least a few million to add someone to the team.

Future second or third baseman from the following article
Cleveland Indians: A little trade deadline deal that turned out to be very big -- Terry Pluto
3. Yu Chang: He opened the Class AAA season playing with a bad finger and was 8-for-53 in April. Chang spent some time on the disabled list. Since he returned, he’s batting .314 (33-for-105) for the Clippers. He could be the Tribe’s second or third baseman next season.

Are the Twins sick?

I know the Tribe has been on a tear the past couple of months, but I think the tide is going to turn back in Minnesota's favor. Cleveland has been feasting on bad teams for the most part. By my count, the Indians are only 23-29 against teams that currently have won at least 45% of their games this season. The Tribe has gone 39-13 against teams that have won under 45% of their games this season, and have only 3 serieses left against those bottom-feeder type teams the rest of the way. The Twins schedule softens over the last couple of months of the season, plus they are buyers at the trade deadline. I doubt that Cleveland is going to do anything to substantially improve their team now, and may trade away more talent than they get back for this year. Overall it is looking to me like today is near the high water mark for Cleveland's AL Central chances and maybe the best chance left to buy stock on the Twins AL Central future.

I had not heard Cleveland was looking into Freddy Galvis, but according to Bovada odds, he is the most likely trade deadline acquisition for the Tribe. If they did that, Tito would have to move Kip back to the outfield yet again

Unfortunately, Chang is probably traded sometime between now and next season. Mark Mathias/Mike Freeman/MiLB signing is probably the stopgap at 2B until Tyler Freeman is ready.

Twins are now up 2 on the Tribe following today's results. I think it is highly likely the Twins win the Central, and the Indians being 1 game back may well have been their high water mark as they try to get back in the division race.

Tribe trade for middling relief pitcher Hunter Wood and a utility infielder who is on the 60-day IL. To be fair, Wood can throw harder than most of their current relievers, but the Rays had to clear a roster spot for a separate trade acquisition. If this is their biggest in-season trade to add to their roster, then they aren't really interested in helping their current team.

I can’t see them being interested. They are in a no-win situation really, they’re good enough to make the playoffs and maybe push past the Twinks for the division...but they’re beyond one single piece from being real WS contenders and they have no money to spend (or so they claim). They can’t sell because they’re a playoff team, and they can’t buy because they’re not a WS team. They are perpetually stuck in upper midcard until they firesale.
