Cleveland Indians (2013 Season)

Ok, tell me any of you Tribe fans noticed this before yesterday:

Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez struck out 10 on Monday, becoming the third Indian in the last 35 seasons to record three 10-plus strikeout games in a span of four starts (Elias Sports Bureau).
Jimenez (11-9, 3.62 ERA) has posted a 2.63 ERA over his last 19 starts dating to May 27, the fifth-lowest mark in the American League in that span entering Tuesday.

Well, ya know, if you want to slither into that last wildcard spot, you gotta beat teams like KC AT FUCKING HOME WHEN YOU GET 12 HITS. 3 runs. 3 runs on 12 hits. And, it looks like McAllister is out of gas. Last three starts have been horrific:

13.1 IP
0-3
8.78 ERA

Thankfully the other WC teams also lost.

1.5 games back

We could really use Masterson down this final stretch. Need a few hitters to get 'hot' too. Swish, Kipnis, Santana, ACab to name a few

the biggest problem is that bourne is in a major funk. when he's on base, things tend to happen. but cabrera is in a downward spiral at the plate. you add to it a bottom of the order that is stubbs and chisenhall and 4/9 of your lineup is an automatic out.

The lineup as a whole is unbelievably weak for a team +10 of .500. Almost nobody is hitting with any consistency. Kipnis, has been slumping since the all-star break. Gomes has been steady. Brantley has been pretty steady too, but you rarely see him get an impactful hit. I think it's a testament to Francona's managing ability that he has a lineup with this many blackholes and still in playoff pursuit. Under Acta, this team would be 15 under .500 right now...if not worse.

I'm not holding out any hope that they make the wildcard. Even if they do, you can bet your bank account they'll get stomped by detroit or boston. I'm more interested to see what they do this winter. If anything, this season has shown they're not too far off. But they'll have to make some moves to take the next step.

And...Stubbs drops the ball, which sums up this entire shit show...doesn't matter how the pitching is when the hitters are all getting mowed down. Mercifully, this will all be over soon.

That's their M.O., and why, regardless of their final record, I have trouble seeing this season as any kind of "success".

this season is a success for the sheer fact that this rabble of stiffs was parlayed into an 80+ win team, when in actuality, they have no business sniffing 80 wins. in reality, they are one legit bat, and some mild pitching improvement away from being a real contender.

Eh, it's a matter of a person's point of view. I guess, in the grand scheme of things, they've certainly overachieved given their level of play most of the year. But I have a hard time looking at a season when they were absolutely OWNED by detroit, and regularly pushed around by any team with a pulse as a total success. But, you're right, they have found some things out about the future, and where fixes are needed. And for the first time in ages, it looks like they have a capable guy in the dugout if they can just get him the pieces he needs to compete with the better teams in the league.

The biggest failure in this season is what it has done to an already fickle fanbase. Once again, they managed to claw into contention well into the season, only to spit the bit when the chips were down. They collapsed HARD in 2011-12, and then peed down their leg in a HUMUNGOUS series with detroit in early august. Yeah, I suppose they could still sneak into a wildcard (though I seriously doubt it), but fans have come to expect these failures, and therefor, aren't going to really get behind this team until they prove they're worth it. Cleveland just isn't a big baseball town, relatively speaking, and they had a chance to get some decent support, but failed miserably. I know that detroit series sucked all the wind out of my sails, re: this season.
