Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

as explained here....

http://deepleftfield.com/2010/11/05/my-goodbye-to-andy-marte/

Of course, this means nothing. Marte is El Gato ? he has nine lives. He?s been designated for assignment before, and no team claimed him. There?s a chance we could still see Marte in the organization next year.

and here.....

http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/?p=35993

Don’t shed too many tears. The guy has nine lives with this organization. I literally wrote this exact same piece two years ago. Knowing Marte, he will clear waivers, end up playing first base in Columbus in 2011 and weasel his way back onto the big league club at some point.

we are not totally out of the clear on this one

Manny rumors?

Indians Prospect Insider reporting rumors that Manny Ramirez in talks for one year cheap deal with Tribe. Tony from IPI is pretty connected with Tribe insiders, but this one seems pretty far fetched..unless the Indians are really ready to finally pull the plug on Pronk? :( Can't see space on the roster for 2 DH types who have very little ability to play in the field.

Can't see the logic behind it unless they simply see him as a gate draw in what's probably gonna be another rebuilding-type year.

that would be the only thing that would make sense about it

I guess they could stick him out in Left Field (where Shelley Duncan played a good chunk of games down the stretch last season) since Travis Hafner and his 13 million dollars per year are clugging up the DH spot..........unless they find some sucker willing to trade for Pronk....which is doubtful

I'd love to sign Manny to a 1 year deal. It'd be the first time in a very long time we had a traditional clean-up hitter. I know a lot of his power is gone but he's still a feared hitter who has a good eye at the plate. For the right price it makes a lot of sense to me.

Don't forget, we also allowed David Dellucci play left field for us. The guy couldn't get to anything, so in that sense we aren't losing anything. If you're willing to let Manny play left, and keep Hafner in the line-up, maybe you just pray for some type of resurgence from Pronk.

Could you imagine Pronk getting hot, Grady bouncing back, Cabrera playing solid ball, and Choo staying hot?? I mean I can't either, but you aren't going to get Manny any cheaper than you will right now.

A line-up of:

SS - Cabrera
RF - Choo
C - Santana
LF - Ramirez
CF - Sizemore
DH - Hafner
1B - LaPorta
3B - Nix
2B - Donald

That would actually be a pretty respectable line-up. I hope it gets done.

considering hafner will likely miss about 20+ games with a shoulder injury, and doesn't hit much against lefties anymore, manny would get some burn at DH to the point he wouldn't have to be in LF every day.

this is a move that makes sense. I will tell you exactly what will happen if this signing occurs.

manny will put up some good numbers for the first half of the year, but cleveland will still suck because the rotation is shitty and the bullpen was stout down the stretch, which means they will shit the bed until july.

so, come trade deadline time, some team is going to need a bat, and will be calling cleveland. cleveland will ship off many for a couple of A ball prospects.

Andy Marte may have been cut loose (for now)

but we are still stuck with Luis Valbuena

a tidbit from a piece about Indians in winter ball

The only real disappointment so far is infielder Luis Valbuena who in 23 games out in Venezuela is hitting .179 with a .555 OPS.

this man somehow managed to suck so bad that he tallied a NEGATIVE 15.2 VORP (value over replacement player... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value_over_replacement_player) which was good enough for 3rd worst in the MLB amongst qualified position players (only beating out Ceaser Izturis and Brandon Wood)

Is there something wrong with Donald at 2B? I liked his bat a lot better anyways....

I don't think so.....but I got a feeling they will refuse to "give up" on Valbuena and he will stick on the roster a good part of the season

I agree that they won't give up on Valbuena yet. I think he gets at least till June to find his swing. He showed, for a couple months in '09, that rare quality for 2B: Power.

You can only name, at nearly any time in the history of MLB, on about one hand the number of power hitting 2B playing the game. The Tribe thought they really hit the lotta by getting one...and coupled with the constant sting of giving up too early on Brandon Phillips...they want to be certain that he is "not only merely dead, [he's] really most sincerely dead" as a power hitter.

I have been meaning to post this ever since they made the announcement of the Gold Glove winners but how in the hell did Choo not get the award. They could have moved Crawford to CF instead of Gut ... and put Choo in his position. In fact, I'm not even sure if they go by position and if that is a correct assumption Choo belongs with no questions asked.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There's never just one way to improve a baseball team. Especially a team with little revenue and a long climb in front of it.
This off-season, the Indians are expected to address their need for a third baseman with a player on a short leash. Someone who could defend himself for a year or two at the hot corner while former No.1 pick Lonnie Chisenhal develops.
http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?...ral managers' meetings | cleveland.com&src=spRecently it was reported that the White Sox might be willing to deal infielder Gordon Beckham. He did not have a good season this year after a promising rookie year in 2009. Beckham, 24, played second base for the White Sox this year. As a rookie he played third. The Indians like him, but does Chicago GM Kenny Williams really want to trade him and would he trade him to a division opponent?

In Florida, second baseman Dan Uggla and the Marlins are bumping heads. Uggla, with one year left before free agency, turned down a four-year, $48 million offer from the Fish. Florida reportedly is considering trading him.
Would the Indians take a chance on Uggla for one year? They could play him at second and try their luck with Jayson Nix, Jason Donald, Jared Goedert or Cord Phelps at third. It's been suggested that Uggla, with 127 homers and 58 errors in the last four years, would be better off at third.
It would be an expensive rental for the Tribe, but Uggla's power could bring more fans to Progressive Field. Last season, the Indians finished last in attendance in the big leagues at 1.3 million.

beckham had a terrible year last year for the white sox but if they are truly done with him i would take a chance on him now...hes only 24 and has alot of upside, and he can play 2nd...before last year he was being compared to a chase utley type...i like dan uggla also but i doubt we make a play for him
