The defensive metrics on him all suggest that he's a subpar fielder. I remember the metrics mostly rated Eric Hosmer below average, yet he won 4 GGs in 5 years (his last in 2017 being a -5 Rfield and -0.9 UZR/150). And then there's the Derek Jeter example.

I can't help but feel like Lane Thomas is their Brandon Guyer addition. I think it comes from a place of feeling confident that they (Cleveland) can replace what they gave up fairly easily. I'm just a little unsure of the fit with their current Outfield.

He's better than Brandon Guyer, but if this is their only move it's wildly underwhelming.

I don't think what they gave up was really huge in relation to our farm system. A 19 Year Old pitcher who has a lot of work to do. Which is fine considering we just spent like a whole draft almost on pitchers. Tena had nice minor league numbers and people have been calling for him to get MLB playing time but I don't think he really had a long future with the organization anyways. The other IF was a throw in pretty much, lower level guy.

IF Cobb can quickly bounce back coming off of a long injury and be like he was the last couple of years this is a big win considering they give up basically nothing (organization depth prospect), if not its meh and they did nothing to improve the rotation. This is the kind of low risk/low cost move I guess we should come to expect from this front office.

Asking prices seemed ridiculous this year, best match for a starter was in the division and I think they kinda felt like they overpaid for Thomas but sucked up for the arbitration year. I'm guessing they have one take it or leave it offer out for the last 15 minutes

Not too bad for Cleveland. While I don't think that Thomas is a great add for the outfield alignment, he does fit the team's m.o. with speed. It looks like Cobb might only need one more rehab start and he'll be back in the majors. It seems Boyd is in a similar situation. Cleveland certainly could use some capable starters and ones that can go more than four innings.

Prices were certainly high. Last year Clemmey signed for supplemental 1st round money and Bresnahan signed for 5th round money. They're high school pitchers, so there's still a long way to go and higher risk there and along with their 2024 pitcher heavy draft, short of them developing into an Ace Starter, I don't think they'll mind losing either.

I think Tena could be a guy who got away. He was a minor league Gold Glover in 2021, the reports still list him as an above average defender, and he's hit really well at Triple-A. It seems Arias has been passed over, Rocchio seems far from a sure bet, and they seem to prefer Martinez in the outfield. Suddenly their SS depth seems rather shallow and that Cleveland is banking on Juan Brito or Rocchio to figure it out. I feel that there's a chance that he blossoms and feels similar to giving up Yanier Diaz.

Without reading any of the talking head fallout, I think a few things were at play here.

First and foremost they are probably pleased with what they see from Gavin Williams, nice result yesterday, just ok before that but I'm sure the deeper dive into his velo and whatever else looks good.

So second, while Alex Cobb is old and boring, your scrap heap is now, Cobb, Matthew Boyd, Allen and McKenzie. And really you only need one of them to get to kind of good as long as Williams goes the right way

Third you can have this kind of patience because the Twins did less, though I really don't think Antonetti is driven much by what other people do or don't do.

If Cobb bounces back and pitches somewhat like he has the last 2-3 years they look like geniuses. But until then, yea, its as very boring scrap heap move.

The Twins not doing shit definitely makes it less maddening that Cleveland was rather cheap at the deadline. I don't think the other main contenders in the AL got a whole lot better either.

I really don't mind giving up these pitchers. You can say they have "high upside" but the chances of them actually reaching that upside is probably pretty low. Also we just spent almost this whole last draft on pitchers, so theres plenty to work with in the system.

As far as Tena goes, I think he was a guy who they saw getting blocked out by other guys so he was expendable. He could end up another Yandy Diaz, that happens, but we've seen a lot of guys with great minor league #s never do much in the MLB.

The other thing too is, we've spent a year with them now and you kinda get a feel for their intangibles. Its obviously not like assholes don't end up being good players but organizationally they have a personality profile they're looking for.
Maybe more like personality traits they aren't.
