Cleveland Guardindians (2024 AL Central Champs)

The Tribe, err Guardians, with 2% odds, win the #1 pick in the 2024 draft. No idea who's projected first overall or even if there's anybody really good. Being that it's Cleveland picking, I'm going to assume this is a weak draft.

yep from what I’ve read it’s a weaker draft with no clear top guy. Baseball America calls it the “thinnest at the top in years”

Of course.

Even if it was a strong draft year this franchise has had a very high bust rate with 1st round picks. Very few of our 1st rounders ever seem to amount to much. I know the MLB draft is the biggest crap shoot of the major sports. But Cleveland has exceptionally bad luck in the 1st round

Well, attrition is starting in already. Trevor Stephan is likely out for the year. Gavin Williams will start the season on the IL. Karinchak looks like he'll also start the season on the IL and Sam Hentges' middle finger is up in the air. You could say Espino, too, but I haven't thought that he's a guy to count on for awhile now.

The good news is that maybe the youngsters will get a chance. I'm a big Joey Cantillo fan and I think Will Dion is a sleeper to watch for. On the offensive side, it certainly seems like Kyle Manzardo is chugging along towards making the opening day roster. There's some buzz that Chase DeLauter might, just maybe, make the opening day roster. He didn't get a big league camp invite, but came over when they needed some extras and has stuck around. Lastly, Angel Martinez could be a darkhorse to win the SS job. While you never should put too much weight in Spring Training, neither Arias or Rocchio have looked good so far, while Martinez has been very consistent.

Any of your rookie picks would be a pretty bold move for this front office. And, I think, an unlikely one. They won’t give up on Arias or Rocchio yet. One of them goes to Cleveland. If he does nothing, the other takes SS by Mother’s Day. Then, if SS is still a problem they’ll bring Martinez up. That’s just consistent with how this team operates.

I think they’ll give that Rule 5 kid from the Diamondbacks a longer look at 1B/DH to start the season. That means Manzardo starts the year in Columbus.

DeLauter has only played a few games at AA and none at AAA. The First Round draft choice CF they got from the Yankers is out of options. They’ll give him a chance as an extra OF to start the season.

We'll see if Vogt changes that. At least we'll know if the usual no opening day debuts was a Tito thing or if it's a baseball operations thing. I think the new Prospects Promotion Incentive and how RotY voting can adjust Service Time could change the way that they operate. With Arias, it's funny how they usually operate. Some guys get every opportunity they can and some others they never give them their true chance. Sometimes it works (Bobby Bradley, Daniel Johnson). Other times it's cost them a valuable player that could have helped them (Will Benson, Yandy Diaz, Jesus Aguilar).

Maybe a name to watch? 23 year old RHP Lenny Torres Jr. piiched 9th inning of spring training game yesterday. Got the save throwing mid/upper 90s. His only appearance in a ML game this Spring. Not made it above Lake County yet.
I would not look up his walk rate if I were you.

Carrasco, Tyler Beede, Arias, Rocchio, Fry, and Freeman make the roster.

The pitching isn't surprising, but the infielders are. Assuming that Fry, Freeman, one of Arias/Rocchio, and Hedges make up the bench, that means one of Florial or De Los Santos are not making the roster, maybe both if Brennan makes the opening day roster as well.
