Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

I've been dreaming of such a scenario, but as Exhawg pointed out, LA probably thinks they have too much of a shot at Love in free agency to make that trade. That being said, if Love really wants to stay in Cleveland and doesn't want to play with Kobe and whatever mess the Lakers hodgepodge together, maybe it is possible?

My other question is whether LA would give up the #2 for Love even if they didn't have a shot at him. I guess that's possible if they don't really love Russell, Okafor, and so on. As much as I like Russell, I'd love to see Cleveland get Okafor.

There are rumors but I'm not buying it either way. I'll believe it when it happens. I do believe the Cavs FO has some deals brewing but nothing that involves Kevin Love leaving Cleveland. I would be shocked if the Haywood contract deal doesn't happen within the first two week of July. My GUESSES are: Lebron and Love will get their raise for a year and then push for max deals when the new TV deal kicks in as many speculate; TT will get a 4-5 year deal at about 10-11M per; Delly will get a 2-yr at 1.5M per or so; Hard to tell what happens to Shumpert or Smith. With Smith opting out, I do not think Cleveland will resign him and go after someone else. Mozgov and Miller have already made their decisions. The Matrix has retired.

So right now the Cavs have:
Irving, Andy, Mozgov, Miller and Harris under contract at the tune of approximately 33M (excluding Haywood's contract). The Cavs FO has some work to do.

Im thinking Love will resign for a one year max deal, Cavs should be the favorites for the title after bringing everyone back.
If we win the championship, im assuming Love will leave and sign a long term deal out West. He would be a free agent again, and we would get nothing in return. But hey Cleveland will have a Ring.

I think the only reason Love comes back this year is that the Cavs will be the best team in the league.

I also think Love comes back for a 1 or 2 year deal. If we win the championship with him next year, and Love gets more integrated into the offense, then he'd very possibly come back for the long run.

Supposedly TT already turned down a 4 year 52M contract or something close a while back, so I think it'll take more than 10-11 to re-sign him.

As for JR, a lot of teams are going to avoid him like the plague, so I think he could end up back here with a similar deal to what he opted out of. Even if JR gets a 7.5M offer from a team with no real shot at the title next year, I think he'll put a premium on the situation in Cleveland.

brian windhorst, believe him or not, already said that the cavs never offered thompson anywhere close to that reported deal. if anything, the cavs will let thompson go and get an offer from another team and match it, and see what he comes back with.

As far as Smith is concerned there is no going after anyone else. They are over the cap so if they let him walk they have the 3 mil taxpayer MLE, a trade for Haywood's contract, and minimum contracts to replace him. They will pay whatever it takes to keep this team together, for the main reason that they can't use the money that walks for other options.

Also TT is going to get a lot more than 11 mil. More like 16.

I agree and think TT has to become more of a complete player to warrant that kind of cash, but there is some thinking that locking him up on a long-term deal of 15M may not be a bad deal if NBA salaries go through the roof with the next CBA.

The only problem with letting TT go out and find a deal is if he doesn't like what he sees he might double down on himself and take a one year deal with the Cavs to be unrestricted next year. Everyone in the NBA knows the Cavs will match any offer that he gets so they aren't going to waste time working out a contract for the Cavs. This is similar to Alex Mack with the Jags. They knew the Browns would match so they worked out a short term deal so he can walk next year. Looking at it now it probably wouldn't have been a bad idea to offer him the same contract Kyrie got last summer just to lock him down for 5 years at what will be a discount when the cap goes up next year. I think you can add 2 mil to each of the below numbers for the same contract if offered right now. I personally think TT is worth the 11-12 a year, but getting him to sign a 4 year 48 mil contract will be easier said than done.

Now that he's opted-out, I don't know if the Cavs need Love as much as Love may need the Cavs (for money and title purposes)....

If the Cavs can commit to defense like they did, get Irving healthy and not overpay for another consistent shooter, I think they could do just as well for less cost.

Just when I think I understand the S&T rules, I find out I don't. On Lamarcus Aldridge, do you know if it's possible for Portland & Cleve to do a mutual sign & trade? I'm guessing no.

My source on this is Windhorst, on one of his radio hits he went over all this. That scenario did come up, but the short answer is no. But it could be done, but we would have to renounce some people, but not as many as the whole team. But that was something I listened to last week and could be a lil foggy since it seemed REALLY complicated.

The only way they would have been better off without Love was if they kept Wiggins and Lebron didn't mind spending half the game playing PF. He needs Love more than Love needs the Cavs because it means that he will very rarely need to play PF. Just having Love on the floor opens things up in a way that only he can do. Imagine the Warriors series with a healthy Love. Green would have had to cover Love, which pulls him away from the basket and means you have Bogut against Mozzy or TT around the hoop. If the Warriors go small you still have another big shooter that can play in the post if they tried to guard him with Barnes. With Mozzy and TT in the lineup the lane gets packed and defenders can help off of both of them and Delly unless they get close to the paint. The Cavs have 3.5 players on the team that can create their own shot. 2 of them were hurt for the Finals and the other .5 forgot to show up. You don't let one of those types of guys walk for nothing.

The Cavs don't need Love??? GET THAT OUT OF YOUR HEAD!

It's not like if we let Love walk that it frees up money to sign someone else. IT DOESN'T! So we lose another front court piece that we can't replace and our bench gets shorter. We do not have the horses to sustain what we did in the playoffs. It would kill LeBron because our offense would be so reliant on him, it would wear him out so he wouldn't be able to do what he did this past playoffs.
