Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

Wait wtf? Doesn’t this just promote tanking more? Now if you’re in the 5 or 6 spot you can still throw in the towel to get one of the bottom 3. More potential for the #1 pick seems like you’re setting up for more teams trying to get it.

1-3 all have a 14% chance of #1. #4 12.5% and #5 10.5%

So even at the 4th or 5th worst record you still have a marginally decent chance at #1 . Not much lower than finishing with the worst record.

But yea i'm sure you'll see teams at the 4/5 slot really cranking the tank engine at the end of the year to try to slide into the top 3. Even if you're sitting 8th/9th and make a downward run toward say a realistic 5 where you'd still have a decent shot at it.

I don't see anyway at this point the NBA could really totally discourage tanking. It's gonna happen no matter what they do. Unless you just want to handicap bad teams forever and never give them a chance to get any good through the draft.

Some people seem to not want to acknowledge that not everyone is "tanking" when they are bad, there are just teams that are truly awful (like the Cavs this year)

Teams in the NBA literally don’t want to make the playoffs. If you’re not one of the top 4-5 teams in either conference, then you are FUBAR if you are 6-8 as long as free agency is designed to set up super teams.

Unless you are a prime free agent destination. Pretty much the only way to get real good in the NBA is to be awful and have a few years of top 3 (maybe top 5) picks (and of course hope you hit on said picks)

Picking in the lower parts of the lottery will generally get you nowhere, you gotta be bad enough to get good. Landing the 6/7/8 seed in the playoffs definitely gets you nowhere. (except mediocrity) those teams just kind of get stuck in that limbo.

Considering the NBA has sold out for super teams, this climate is likely to change no time soon (if ever)

Today's younger fans are generally fans of players as opposed to teams. I don't know what their viewership/attendance numbers are like, but I'd wager a hefty sum that it remains strong with the under-25 or 30 crowd, and it's slipping sharply with older fans. As long as the net still makes them money, there's no reason to change. When you see people wearing NBA shit, 80% is the Warriors or wherever LeBron is playing that year. Hardcore fans are dying off. I threw in the towel two years ago because, to me, it's unwatchable dreck and there's no sense in following along unless you're one of the two or three teams in the entire league who has a shot at the finals. It's not basketball anymore, it's absolute trash. The nba is truly the WWE with a ball.

Now get off my lawn.

Currently on pace to win 6 or 7 games. That’s 6 or 7 more games than minutes I’ve spent watching these bums this season. The NBA is already third on my list of sports leagues I give a fuck about. This roster is about to put it behind hockey.
I will always support my local teams and want them to do well...but the NBA is way behind college football, the NFL, baseball, soccer anywhere in the world, golf and tennis majors, MACtion, old AWA and MidSouth wrestling on the WWE network, et al.

I can't remember the last time I actually sat through a whole NBA regular season game (or even half of one) Now that the Cavs are laughable, you'll probably be hard pressed to catch me watching many playoff games as well.

When you can already call almost all the playoff teams and who the likely finals participants are every year before the season even starts, that makes for one stale ass league. Sadly enough people love it though so it won't be changing anytime soon.

Calling the playoff teams is easy. Over half the damn league makes it. You could guess every team in the NBA and still nail over 50% of your picks.

MLB: 10 of 30 make it.
NFL: 12 of 32 make it.
Hockey: Couldn’t tell you.

NBA: 16 of 30 make the playoffs. Sixteen.
Of thirty. It’s the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl of professional sports postseasons.

Its more lame to me that it's routinely the same 16 teams every year, you might get 1 or 2 new ones who slip in, but there is very little parity in the NBA overall. You know only 2 or 3 teams have a shot to actually win it all from the start.
