Report: Kevin Love will likely re-sign with Cavaliers

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love is set to become a free agent on July 1, but perhaps there won't be much drama when that happens. ESPN's Brian Windhorst reports that it's likely he isn't going anywhere:

The Cavs are confident they will be able to re-sign Love and have been since they traded for him in August. Though they cannot formally make an offer until Wednesday, sources say that the Cavs for months have planned to extend a five-year, maximum contract for Love in excess of $110 million despite his shoulder and back injuries last season.

Love may speak to other teams next week, but there is a growing belief across the league that he will back up statements made throughout the season and return to the Cavs. Several sources close to Love have indicated he is likely to stay in Cleveland.

One other thing: Love and LeBron James were spotted together on Sunday at a hotel pool in Los Angeles. It reportedly wasn't a "meeting," but perhaps the idea of continuing to play together came up.

Usually there are 2 things that an NBA player looks for when choosing a team. (1) Where can I make the most money? (2) Where can I win? When the answer to both of those questions is the same place the decision is pretty easy to make IMHO.

Signing Love for 5 years at 110M would be perfect.
1. We wouldn't have to go through this next year.
2. It would be less than the max after the cap increase.
3. We could easily trade Love later.

There is a reason Lebron will be the last to resign, and it has nothing to do with cap space.

ESPN sources tell @WindhorstESPN & I that Cavs and Tristan Thompson are nearing agreement on deal that will pay the RFA in excess of $80 mil
Also a great signing if they can lock it down. Its really good business by Gilbert, invest now and throw large numbers out there, knowing it will be hard for them to turn down and knowing that when the cap spikes, a big deal now looks like a reasonable one later. Players get long term stability. I can see a lot of GM/owners signing for less years when there is more money involved.
