Cleveland Browns (official thread of Masochism 2015)

as cool as it would be to see Cardale QB the browns, Hackenberg and Goff are the better fit for the way the offense is built right now.

Hackenberg would slide right into the 21st century Browns QB legacy. He's definitely a perfect fit.

A lot of folks think Mayock is the best of the best.. if so, we should be very happy because we just nabbed 7 of his top 100

12. Danny Shelton, DT, Washington
26. Cameron Erving, C, Florida State
46. Duke Johnson, RB, Miami (Fla.)
51. Nate Orchard, DE, Utah
93. Xavier Cooper, DT, Washington State
96. Ibraheim Campbell, S, Northwestern
98. Charles Gaines, CB, Louisville

and a number of the analysts thought Ifo Ekpre-Olomu was 1st - 2nd round material

so we did pretty good today

Thanks for this summary... I haven't had time to follow the draft this year.
Have they made any moves at all with the QB situation? Or it's all on Johnny Rehab now?

Eh, I don't really have a problem with any of the picks, and I'm as critical as it comes. Not sure you can necessarily get desperate on day 3, since rounds 5-7 are basically a crapshoot anyway.

As an aside, they continue to show an odd aversion to drafting Buckeyes. I'm the last guy to say scoop up every available tOSU player, and I'm often critical of folks here that say they should sign just about every FA Buckeye...Ginn and Troy being prime examples...but I don't think they've drafted a single Buckeye since Robo in 2008. That just seems odd.

They do seem to have an aversion to Buckeyes on Draft Day, but in recent years they have gone out and got some through FA. Unfortunately Bentley met Staph, and Whitner can't have many years left ? But Hartline was also added this year.
Still think we missed on Hyde last year. You want to a dominant defense, you need a beast at RB on offense to control the game and wear them down in the 2nd half. Hyde is/was a perfect mold for that, and the 49ers made a great selection by choosing him to be Gore's successor. I'm not sold on West or Crowell... they seem to tire in the 3rd and 4th rather than getting stronger like you need. They also have a propensity to fumble. Adding Duke is interesting though. I liked watching him with Miami... and that takes some effort because I can't stand any of the FL teams and was rooting for Nebraska to not add to the embarrassment of OOC losses early in the season.

Am I confused or does the DL now consist of something similar to....

D. Bryant - Shelton - Starks
Hughes - Taylor - Winn
Kitchens - Cooper - Bryant

That's alot of DL - I read Armonty Bryant was moved to OLB? Can't imagine we'd use a 3rd rounder on a 3rd string guy too so sounds like maybe Taylor will be on the move....

Taylor is expected to leave in 2016 FA... but I suppose now he could be used as trade bait?

To be honest a lot of this seems to have an eye on 2016. Both 1st rounders are at least partially about Taylor and Mack leaving after this year. The Oregon kid is clearly about 2016... not sure what can be expected of him now. The Northwestern kid is tied to Gipson leaving in 2016.
Some have even suggested that if the WSU receiver pans out they could cut Bowe. That pick just seems boggling to me though.

The failure to take any significant action on the QB position also suggests they've already punted on 2015 and picking up players to "rebuild" (I don't know why I'm using re here) with the future in mind more than anything else.
I guess Manziel will get his year to prove himself while they try to position themselves to pick up a real QB in 2016 when he fails ? It's looking like 2016 is also a better crop of draft QBs than 2015. And having already punted on this season, they'll be high enough to pick one? Maybe?

You've been around long enough to know how this goes...

they will somehow manage to win enough games to put them just on the outside of all the elite talent and/or Tennassee Jerra will forget that they were all in agreement with this plan and fire everyone, so the next couch will come in change defensive schemes again so they'll end up having to redraft defense all over...

Monty has been moved to a 2point 9 tech LB. Between a position switch and rehabbing a major injury, he'll be on the roster bubble.

That leaves 8 Dline spots for the big hogs with Phil rehabbing injury as well. Seeing as how this was our biggest weakness last year, I have no problem carrying extra bodies. Plus, I'd be willing to bet my life we don't pick up the option
on Taylor's contract and he walks.

I don't think Farmer has 'punted' anything. He realizes we were not going to give up RG3 type picks for Mariota, no QB below the top two would come in and make a significant difference over McCown so the idea is to make the team as strong as possible in the trenches and roll the dice hoping that we pick back up where the offense left off in the early 2014 season. High YPA play action passing built off a badass run game
with a defense that can get the ball back. I see zero issue with that as its basically the same concept Seattle has been so successful with the past 3 years.

D-line was decimated by injury last year, Taylor and Winn are both free agents after this year. Plus, Starks is an older guy so you never know how long he will be able to contribute. You need a lot of big bodies to make it through the whole season. Shelton will primarily play on run downs to start out and Cooper is a 3 technique who will probably be used in obvious passing situations.

Armonty Bryant is being moved to outside backer which I think his body type fits that position better. Couple that with a fully healthy Mingo(guy played with one arm last year) whom you hope to see start to realize his pass rushing potential.

Add Nate Orchard who had 18.5 sacks last year which was tied for the most in the nation and hopefully Krueger producing at the same level as last year and it looks like the Browns have a solid two deep rotation at all of front seven positions.

This draft shows this Browns brass values the bug uglies and it looks like they have at least for this season created some depth and competition for both sides of the line.

I honestly don't mind if they have punted with an eye on the future. It worked for the Cavs (well, there's no Lebron to save the Browns)
I just hope that 2nd part doesn't come true. This coaching staff seems half decent and even though a lot of these players won't have an immediate impact/upgrade on guys already on the roster... most of them are very high quality. Character too.

Northwestern kid is being brought in to take over the Jim Leonard role as third safety and learn behind Whitner and hopefully be over to take over that spot in a few seasons. There is no way that they don't pay Teshaun, he is to valuable to the d.

if you go back to pettine's time with the jets and buffalo, you'd see that the FS spot is very player friendly in his scheme, with guys that have shown to be average once going elsewhere, excelling with pettine. so, if gipson wants to break the bank at FS, he's going to be in for a rude awakening. you'd think the fact that he was only given a 2nd round tender, and got about zero interest on the open market would show that his services aren't nearly as valued as he may think.

Tashaun started show casing his abilities under Horton. While I do agree, Pettine's defenses have excelled with even average safety play - Tashaun has shown to be capable outside of that scheme and I'd like to lock him up with a long term deal. Are we talking top safety money? No. I don't think top 15 would hurt, however.

Browns sign 4th-round pick DB Ibraheim Campbell

...
"Has three older brothers that played college football: Rashad Campbell (Cornell), Aquil Stinson (Georgetown), and Malik Jones (Bloomsburg)."

just struck me as somewhat comical
