Cleveland Browns (official thread of Masochism 2015)

Not a fan of the uni's. McCown freaks under pressure, unless he believed 5'7 Hawk could win a jump ball?!?

I'm not seeing all this 'growth' people are claiming about Johnny. I still see missed reads and very inconsistent footwork.

Johnny has improved, that's a positive. Running game is shit. Defense was good for missing guys.

A total snoozer till the 4th quarter, as inticipated though. Week one can't get here soon enough. That way I can yell at my TV for 3 hours while McCown and the offense fucks about and the defense finds away to fuck up in the 4th.

The biggest problem is that most of their receivers (especially right now with all the injuries) are slot dots. if you're going to throw up a jump ball you better have a guy like Bowe, Pryor, or Mayle on the other end to fight for it. At least 3 of the top 4 WR's right now are tiny, which isn't going to win you anything with semi tight coverage. I'm not sure if they're keeping all the RB passing that they are talking about under wraps until the season, but I'm wondering where that is. At least try and see if Crow and West can catch. It can't all be based on Johnson.

The Bills are just a team you want to get passed in the preseason. With that DL you just want to make it out healthy. Our OL will be better for having to face them 3 times in a week. I do believe the OL is 6 deep right now, which I guess is better than last year, but a lot of these other guys that they are expecting things from are shit. Next week I think I would roll out the starting OL in the first series and then rotate in Erving at his different positions for as long as the starters are in. Pryor needs to get healthy to get on the field, but I bet the Shaw injury made him all but a lock for the roster. All they really need from him as an emergency QB are 6 plays (3 run/3 pass) of wildcat offense, which they can use all season as a change up.
They need to get the DL and CB's healthy so we can see the improved pass rush because I haven't seen it yet. It is probably hurt by playing mobile QB's that they aren't scheming for in the preseason. Hopefully they will break one off in Jameis next week. Tampa should be a good 3rd preseason game.

The other thing that is, and has been, killing this team is everyone’s seeming love affair with drafting tweener pass rush savants (at best). Wimbley, Mingo, Sheard, Orchard, and let’s not forget the all-time greatest draft pick ever, Veikune…they can’t figure out if these guys are DEs or OLBs, and regardless of where they play, they can’t tackle their sister in the run game. Shelton is a beast, I love the guy, but Rubin and Taylor were too, and the DL can only do so much. The LBs have to be able to make plays in the run game, and the run defense has sucked since 1999 because they never can.

This suckfest is on national TV?

I tuned in about 30 minutes ago because it is literally the only thing on...announcers were talking about Josh McCown not being that bad, right system, good player, etc. etc. Next play he steps into the pocket and heaves a 40 yard wobbler that gets picked. Turns out it was the guy's 2nd pick of the night? I don't know. Turned it off.

Still #Browns.

Josh McCown will exhibit the same leadership and maturity (read general skittishness in the pocket and bad decision making) he showed last year for Tampa Bay.

So another year of hoping they can at least get a split with the Bungles...

Where have you gone Jim Brown, Otto Graham, Marion Motley, MacSpeedie, Dante Lavellie, Dr. Frank Ryan, Paul Warfield, Bernie Kozar, Gary Collins, Ernest Byner... the guys and the teams that made most Sundays fun?

To be fair, the franchise never knows whether it needs DEs or LBs because they switch between 4-3 and 3-4 ever couple years.

Yeah, I did watch him last year. Again I'm not saying there isn't a difference, but this giant leap forward I hear many people saying just doesn't pass the eye test.

To me, at least it doesn't pass.

I think it's tough to say because Cleveland's backup ol is a mess. Manziel is running for his life most of the time. It also didn't help that after they scored, Cleveland put in the scrub crew and Buffalo still had quite a few 2's in. That being said, manziel isn't a legit starting qb.

Orchard has had his moments so far. As both a pass rusher and in coverage. He also showed up last night holding the edge better. I'm not ready to put him in the same group as our previous OLB's.
