Cleveland Browns (official thread of Masochism 2015)

I'm actually hoping Manziel shows enough the rest of the season that the Browns don't waste a top 3 pick on a QB. I'd hate to inflict the Browns on him, but you'd have to think Bosa would help the pass rush and the fans would love the pick. They already have 3 QB's under contract for next year and I don't see a Manning in this years draft. If anything I'd like to see a mid to late round flier on CJ if he comes out. I don't see an elite WR worthy of a top 3 pick right now either, but if Thomas is there in the early second he would be a steal.

So if the Browns are going to draft 3 Buckeyes you have to throw Urban's name in the coaching search. Just make him the GM/Coach and give him 10 mil to bring in Herman as his OC. :p

Agree. I thought that Johnny played pretty well yesterday when it came to throwing the ball. He was pretty accurate and for the most part stayed in the pocket.

I just do not understand O'Neills (Pet) defensive philosophy. They leave their corners on an island but hardly ever blitz that makes no sense to me whatsoever unless I am missing something. I also thought a couple of those PI's were poor calls by the officials but maybe I am a homer:wink:

you are missing something. o'neill loves the delayed safety blitz. of course, it never comes close to being effective and it leads to situations where armonty bryant is trying to cover marvin jones in the slot or xavier cooper is trying to drop back into zone coverage. the whole defensive scheme is a dumpster fire, where that dumpster is filled with rotten Indian food, and soiled diapers.

and really, when you start seeing tweets and comments from players questioning the coaching staff and people saying that the staff is making decisions on players based on personal vendettas rather than who should actually be playing, you start to get a feel that it may be more of a pettine issue than a ray farmer issue.

I guess I do not understand how he was so "successful" as the defensive backfield coach in Buffalo and Pet was the DC. Rex Ryan got fired this morning but Mike would never get rid of his friend O'Neil. Not suggesting we should go after Ryan but a change needs to be made sometime. Probably not this season the way Haslam is talking.

Point of order...Rob Ryan got fired, not Rex. And he's coordinated some horrific defenses the past couple of years.

pettine was DC in Buffalo and even then they were not good against the run at all. he's a disciple of the Rex Ryan scheme, which is clearly no longer a viable nfl defense, as evidenced by Ryan having a stacked defense in Buffalo that can't really stop anybody. Bottom line is that he rode Ryan's coattails as far as he could, and now the ride is over, for both of them as Rex will probably be joining his brother in the unemployment line after this season.

Spot on. Buffalo was awful against the run in many instances during the 2013 campaign. That's with four (count em') FOUR fucking pro bowlers on the Dline.

I was asking some questions about this defense from a schematic point of view and I realize it requires several very hard things to get in the NFL, let alone on one side of the ball on a single team.

1) 'lockdown' corner. Two, really. With the amount of man on the outsides, heavy blitzing, delayed blitzing and non-assignments given too the safeties, you truly do need Revis and Crow to make it effective.

2) Elite pass rusher. From the 2pt no less. It's the hardest thing in the NFL to scout and land, especially with collegiate defenses the way they are. Finding an undersized DE that has spent time not having his hand in the ground.
I liked Beasley in this last draft a decent amount. But he's even taking some beatings up front in ATL. Its just extremely difficult to project these kinds of players then develop them.

3) Space eating, 2 gapping NT. I believe Danny can be that. He's flashed some moments of brilliance and he's even done quite well when we've gone to more 1gap assignments. He might not be dominant
as a rookie but he's shown a hell of a lot more at his position than Phil Taylor ever did.

Bottom line, I don't think in today's NFL, this scheme is viable. With the emphasis on defensive holding and PI, playing press man on the outsides is getting harder and harder. For years Rexy has gotten away with having two premier corners and being blitz happy. Shit doesn't work anymore.

I truly do believe to be an elite NFL defense, your strength needs to be in your front 7 and specifically your front 4. You need to be able to pressure the QB without blitzing and do it consistently WHILE being able to play coverage. If not, nothing else matters.

I guess I do not understand how he was so "successful" as the defensive backfield coach in Buffalo and Pet was the DC.

Helps having a monster front four.

edit: Let me say this, for giving up on the season. Go full tank mode. Get me Bosa.

I do believe there is some talent on this team. Might not be the best, but with a sound coordinator, position coaches and the right mind, I believe this group can over achieve and be greater than the sum of their parts. On defense at least.

On offense? Mack might be slowly getting back to form. I know Erving was manhandled most of the day. Credit the Steelers staff for getting Heyward matched up on him quite often.

I just can't rationalize the running game. Is it pad level? Splits? Just bad communication on assignments? Clearly it isn't the personnel, this same group this time last year was fucking dominant until Mack went down. I also see individual defeats here and there, I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. However it I don't feel its just any ONE thing that ails this rushing attack.

Rex Ryan is going to be fired after just one season with the Bills, with 4 years left on his contract? Um, no. I'd say it's more likely Rob joins his brother on Rex's staff in Buffalo (unfortunately).
