a question I often have.. why cut/release a good player vs trading him for anything/something.. Jarvis, Tretter, OBJ, ?!?!?
Yep, if you don’t want the contract, chances are no one else does either. It’s why the NBA has this weird leverage tactic of absorbing bad contracts.I think they tried at least with OBJ and Landry and nobody wanted their contracts. You don't have much power to unload a player when someone else knows that you'll just cut them to save money. The only reason you make that trade is if you don't think you can sign the player after they are cut. OBJ gave back 3M in order to get himself cut rather than picked up on waivers. Hooper is an example of a player they would have to trade rather than cut if they want to get rid of him. With his cap hit they are better off keeping him as the 2nd or 3rd TE rather than paying him to play for someone else.
It was reported they're doing just that nine minutes before you made this post.Watch I said that about Hooper and they'll cut him anyway.
Means they're (likely) desperately trying to clear up cap space.
One if the issues with pursuing a top 10 QB - they eat up so much money.
So not only are you sacrificing all of your cap space with a lot of holes to fill, but you are trading away a bunch of pick's you'll need to add good players to the roster. Nobody is going to come to Cleveland on a discount like the Rams or Bucs can do. I fear Hunt will be sacrificed since he is a great player on a small contract for another year so he has trade value.
Kareem doesn't bother me. You don't need two top 10 RBs. I'm high on D'Earnest, even as a spot starter. In this case, Hunt offers more to this team long term by being a trade piece.
As for the picks, the value you look for lines up pretty well with the rounds we would (allegedly) be keeping and targeting positions sacrificed. IDL, IOL, RB and TE all have tremendous mid round value. If we have late 2nd - 4th round picks, you can fill quite a few holes with smart picks and good coaching. Hell, the top TE's in the NFL were picked in the 3rd and 5th rounds respectively.
Hooper is like a 3.75 dead money but 9.5 mill savings as a post June 1st cut. (per over the cap which isn't always right but, this has come up over and over since December) He just hasn't been that good, and not much at all down the field.
