Cleveland Browns (Finally drafting Buckeyes)

Baker can still be an above average QB for this offense. The question(s) are...

- Just how much surrounding talent does he need?

- How much do you pay him?

- How long before you take a shot on a late round 1st who looks like they would have a higher ceiling?

Bakers height isn't his largest issue. Rodgers isn't much taller, Breesy, Wilson, Murray are undersized. Dak is only 6'2 maybe with change wearing cleats.

I don’t think he is being a diva. I still want him gone. We have plenty of tape to see that he and Baker are rarely on the same page. Baker has more success with every other receiver on the roster. His stats throwing to OBJ are horrendous. That isn’t necessarily OBJ’s fault, but it’s still a problem and has been since he arrived.

I’d rather spend that money at any other position than on the world’s most expensive decoy.

It feels to me like he has more than three drops over the last few weeks.. let alone the last two seasons. The drop in the Chargers game was inexcusable.

Again, I don’t have a dog in the fight. I only occasionally catch a Browns game. I’m sure someone will put together a video of his drops some time soon. Per the stats he only has 2 this year, but they don’t count PBU’s as drops. So if he catches the ball and gets hit or has the ball knocked away, that’s not considered a drop to them. I disagree with that, but that’s their logic.

I think the other problem is OBJ is supposed to have large catch radius so you expect him to catch the ball if he can get a hand on it. I'm sure those don't count as drops either. The video we really need is the overlay of what the routes were supposed to be and what OJB did. I'm sure Baker deserves some blame for not hitting OBJ more, but if the WR isn't where he's supposed to be and the 6' QB can't see over his OL there aren't many options. Baker isn't going to be rolling out much this year with the injury so it is what it is.

I really hope the Browns got OBJ to forfeit a big chunk of the money he has left this year to release him. If not I would have just let him sit on his couch the rest of the season if I'm paying him anyway. Put him on the IR with the shoulder injury and let him sit. These things usually come back to bite the Browns with OBJ going someplace where he'll play the Browns later this season and have the game of his life. He's already burned Eli and Baker so I don't think I'd want to be the next QB on the list. Brady or Rogers are probably the only 2 that could put him in his place.

The sound of the Browns' locker room burning down....

The bigger issue, IMO, is it just wasn't working on the field between OBJ and Baker. OBJ was clearly frustrated by that and Mayfield has enough to work through already.

The dust will settle and both parties will move on.

I'm not sure who (or how) is tabulating the stats, but he's still listed as having just one target last Sunday against Pittsburgh. That is not true. It begs to wonder how many targets or drops are missed on the stats.

I just looked it up to see what a target is, by NFL definition. Uncatchable passes are not considered targets. Seems that’s very subjective. A 10ft high pass isn’t uncatchable for Julio Jones, but it might be for Tyreke Hill. That’s dumb.

I didn’t see the Browns/Steelers game, would you consider any of his other targets uncatchable?

IIRC he had one at the 5 that was a bad pass, but he got a hand on it. Would have been a fantastic catch, but not uncatchable for OBJ. Maybe stats need targets, catchable balls, catches. Not defending Baker, but sometimes an uncatchable ball is a bad route. On the bright side Baker usually has his best games after getting publicly called out so I wouldn't be surprised to see him throw for 400 yards and 5 TD's against the Bengals to throw the blame on OBJ.

Former NFL wide receiver and current NFL Network analyst Steve Smith Sr. did not hold back on the Cleveland Browns, Odell Beckham Jr. saga. Smith had a strong message for Browns QB Baker Mayfield.

“You’re average,” Smith said on the Thursday Night Football pregame show. “You’re not very good. Odell is moving on because of you. Bottom line.”

Apparently Steve Smith is not a Baker Mayfield fan....:ohno:

The definition of a target is interesting and yeah, quite subjective. This is the pass in question (at 12:18)...

Is it perfect? No. Is it catchable? I'd certainly think so. Especially for someone who acts like a top WR. I'd call it a target and a drop. To me, he ducked full effort to avoid taking a hit. At the absolute least, it's a target.

"Catchable" is a bit subjective but also would boil down to percentage of catch possibility.

That throw at 12:18 is dogshit. Baker hung it out high and late (a familiar theme with Baker) between two safeties. That usually spells your receiver getting absolutely splattered. Like... Peyton Manning getting Austin Collie almost killed on a field splattered. Odell has to elevate long before that throw arrives.

Jarvis had to do the same thing later to try and save the drive on 4th. Ball was late, high and slightly behind. I even have the all-22 and it looks worse.

The receivers did not play well against Pittsburgh, but when pushing the ball downfield Baker was no better. But would I call that a "catchable" target by meaning that my QB put it in a reasonable place for the receiver to make a grab while also protecting himself as much as he can on a football field? Hell no.

Here's the hit to Collie for reference.
