You have to think there are going to be a few more cap drop casualties of note as well (of the Kyle Van Noy variety) now.that the official number is set.
This is kind of a dangerous game for the players, I mean sure the cap is going to go up, but, if there's a bunch of one year deals, then there's gonna be a whole bunch of FA's in the class, and you get paid as much by being the 3rd best DE available as much as anything else... I suppose demand would go up, but cash strapped teams are.going tp look at it as 2 draft classes before 2022 starts.
My guess is, they try to get what the need in this cap number, then that stays the baseline and they use the increase to front load mayfield and Wards extensions.
That said, they need at least 2 DE's -- my tendency is to think they will sign one early, then draft best DL available with pick 1 or 2 then see what they need to pick up after that.
There should be a pile of reasonably priced DBs available. I think they're caught between there with Delpit and Williams about how much to invest.
Do they even use Linebackers?
I don't think they really respect the LB position, but I think it would be great for the team if they could find 1 bad ass every down LB. They are going to run a lot of 4-2-5, but I don't think they can rely on Phillips, Takitaki and Wilson to fill both spots. If they add in a stud to those 3 I think they will be ok. I could see them drafting 3 DB's and hoping 1 or 2 of them can cut it along with Greedy and Delpit getting healthy. DL is a priority and probably most lost likely FA targets. The biggest improvement on defense will be consistently getting to the QB only rushing 4.
Seems like every regime in this franchise has a position they think doesn’t mean shit. For Farmer it was WRs, for these guys it appears to be LBs

Every regime since Phil Dawson left and kicker
Yeah, I mean I guess I'm curious to see if "not valuing" means just not cap space, or not cap space or draft capital (rookie deals $). I suppose the only way we'll find out is if the burn a 1 or 2 on one. (Phillips was late 3rdish? I can't remember--- ah, he was the 2nd 3rd Rd pick at #97)
@exhawg - there's gonna be a bunch of ex-saints I'd be interested in most likely... I'm guessing at 32 he's gonna be in the "take the most guaranteed cash" possible category... (yeah I had to look up his age, and see who else they cut so far)
They drafted Oklahoma dude didn't they? I didn't expect him to suck like he did.
I'm not a Saints fanboy, but I had someone pretty well connected in the NFL talk up Janoris before last season. That being said I am a tOSU fanboy so if the Saints (or anyone else) want to cut any of their Buckeyes I'll be more than happy to see the Browns sign them.
Otherwise you end up with Cody Parkey who is going to hit most of the kicks, but you always worry if he is going it miss the one that costs you a game.
the Saints did something to Brees contract where the last few years of it do not even count against their cap currently. I guess they will take a hit sometime down the road. I cannot remember the word that was used but it was like the last couple years on his contract do not even exist currently. I guess that is why they can keep all of these high-priced contracts.https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/new-orleans-saints/
Marshawn Lattimore certainly would be a candidate. Thomas and Jenkins are accelerated hits)
How in the fuck is Taysom Hills cap number 16 million?

They are 25 mill over....
https://www.si.com/nfl/saints/news/saints-renegotiate-drew-brees-contractThe Saints are one step closer to getting under the salary cap, according to a Friday night report. As first reported by Jason Fitzgerald at Over the Cap, the team has renegotiated Drew Brees' contract to free up nearly $24 million for the 2021 deficit. The move lowers his base salary to a little less than $1 million.
