He was likely going to get cut otherwise. I've also heard his name thrown out there for the RG spot. He was a pretty terrible starting RT, but I'd rather have him as a backup than any of the other trash off the heap. 90% of the snaps is a pretty tall order if he can't play guard.

Dieken as always stated that he thought Hubbard would be a better guard then tackle but I guess that is not saying a whole lot but if he thinks he can play guard I guess that is worth keeping him around since they reworked his contract. Wish they would use some of their cap money on the defensive side of the ball. Getting a nice LB would be a pleasant surprise they should also rework Vernon's contract or let him go and get a good rush DE

The issue with Hubbard moving to guard is that his waist bending at the snap happens from time to time. He'll be eaten alive on the inside if he can't win the leverage game.

A reworked deal for Vernon might be best for both sides. I don't believe any of his 2020 contract is guaranteed? Big issue is that he has missed about 25% of the season the last few years. When he's on the field he generates respectable pressure numbers and this draft class really isn't anything to write home about outside of the obvious in Chase. Sure, you have guys like Chaisson, Matos, Baun & Epensa. (Not a fan of the latter) But 2 of those are guys used strictly as weakside pass rushers either 3pt or off ball. I wouldn't really look at them as plug and play LE's.

So can Vernon be had on the cheap(er)? A price that would more reflect his limited schedule issues and maybe reduce his snap count a little while we work in other options alone the dline rotation? Maybe. I would find that best. But I'm still of the opinion this line needs to focus more on limiting the running game. We were pretty bad at points last year and our best LB is in Jacksonville now. So that doesn't really help a whole hell of a lot. How we held up on the edge sans Myles really didn't look good.
