Cleveland Browns (2016 thread of unrelenting dumpster conflagration)

I would have been fine with them not drafting a QB at all in this draft. I know that Cody Kessler isn't going to start for or win games for the Browns. The Browns should have used that pick elsewhere. Next year, the Browns are going to draft a QB in the first round so this pick was a waste IMO. THIS was not what I wanted. I also agree that if they were to take a QB later, there were better options. Still happy it wasn't Connor Cook.

This is what you get when you take a flier on a QB in the third round instead of taking a guy at the top of the draft. I thought this is what most Browns fans wanted....

Really LJB? You think that most Browns fans wanted Kessler? I would rather not draft a QB at all in this draft and roll with RG III, Luke, Austin and Connor as the QBs for THIS season. This draft alone will not get the Browns to the promised land. One thing for sure Kessler is not part of the equation. No idea what the FO was thinking here.

You trusted The Quarterback Whisperer when he decided not to take Carson Wentz at #2, so now you've got to trust him when takes Cody Kessler in round three.

If taking Kessler in round three was stupid, then maybe passing on Wentz at #2 was also stupid.

Can't have it both ways.

Ogbah, I'm eh on. Productive and great athlete. We'll see. Like the nassib pick and Coleman picks. Kessler, meh. At least it wasn't cook. The one trend I see is all these guys were highly productive in college and are high character football junkies.
Kessler aside... The productive high character guys that also have good measurable are the guys you should be building teams with. They won't all work out (as LJB quoted his friend, sometimes they end up pussies... Or injured- which is nobodys fault) but much better than morons, or malcontents or apathetic guys just happy to get drafted. I'd like to see that continue with these first 2 round 4 picks..(Josh Perry and Jeremy cash still on the board . Then feel free to do some river boat gambling.

Probably could have Kevin Hogan in round 6 or Cardale if you want to take a QB at all that is a project. Could have used that pick for offensive line, lb, db......yada yada yada....
They could still take one of those guys if they are there at the end of the 4th of later. In fact it wouldn't surprise me. Hugh may not want Shaw or Austin whatshisnuts, and they could always trade McCown.

Exactly right. Past wentz and Goff you're just buying a lottery ticket. He most likely won't work out. But the fact is.. All they guys taken outside round one most likely won't either. If Hue likes the kid... Take the kid you like then.

Perry and Cash...I would poop. There are two starters right there. As for Kessler...they must see something. I guess we'll see. But I won't be a hypocrite...I am elated they didn't take doucherocket.

Cash is most likely a very useful package guy, but would be badass in run support. I'd be happy if they got him.

There are about 4 different guys they could take at the top of round 4 which would be upgrades. Devante Booker, Jeremy cash, a couple different bigger wrs, or an interior ol. Outside of reaching for Kessler, the browns appear to have played the draft board well in terms of anticipating position runs and getting value.

Edit: the twitters this morning is saying that Dallas was 100% taking ogbah if he was there and the Titans might have as well as they ended up with Dodd.

Keesler is all over the charts. He has some excellent pros but he has some damning cons.

Strengths

  • Great ball placement on throws inside 10 yards, leads receiver to maximize YAC
  • Good timing and anticipatory throwing, key traits with his lack of arm strength
  • Gets ball out quickly with clean release
  • Athleticism and mobility to escape pressure
  • Despite average stature, shows surprising strength in the pocket to break tackles
  • Takes good care of the football, knows his limitations and doesn’t take unwise risks
  • Good accuracy on the move, can be utilized on rollouts
  • Three-year starter in a pro-style system
  • High football IQ, works through progressions quickly
  • Highly competitive, tough kid with ideal leadership traits and work ethic
Weaknesses

  • Lacks ideal height and frame for a quarterback
  • Significant arm strength issues, velocity on intermediate to short range leaves a lot to be desired
  • Will hold ball a tad too long to try and get extra mustard on it, leads to passes dipping early down the field
  • Past 15 yards, accuracy to all areas of the field plummets
  • Deep ball placement is all over the place, rarely finds range to put pass on the money
  • Touch throw accuracy is poor, struggles to find proper range
  • Will often check down to easy throws underneath due to limitations deep
  • Has to crank the ball up to drive it down the field or to the far hash, slows delivery
  • Retreats/gives ground in the pocket rather than step up when facing edge pressure
  • Can’t test tight windows efficiently
  • Will get rattled when facing interior pressure, fall off his base

The Kessler pick is annoying b/c he's not going to do anything an Austin Davis couldn't... or any number of previous year's draft picks that will be cut/released/whatever. Could have just as easily gone dumpster diving Indians style (like they always do anyway once the QB injuries pile up). Kinda worrying if this is the first QB that analytics provides, 3rd round or not there's other guys available and Kessler is a reach.
It basically makes that Carolina trade worthless... though I'm not sure there was anyone between the 2 3rd rounders we ended up with that would've been great? Brax is the only one that stands out to me, but we already got the requisite midget speed demon slotdot in the 1st round. Vannett 1 pick later was a steal though...

Matt Barkley 2.0.
