Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

So, is the myth of Brian hoyer dead yet?
It had better be.

Hoyer reminds me of a pitcher with a 6.32 ERA who lucks his way to a 9-5 record with incredible run support. You watch the guy play, and there's absolutely no correlation between his performance and his record.

I hope that Browns fans will finally realize that the team has been winning despite Hoyer, not because of Hoyer.

I posted during the game that Hoyer isn't doing anything Colt McCoy couldn't do.

I know it's a bad defense, but I watched Colt McCoy go 31-47 for 392 yards and 3 TDs against the Colts today. Same story- can throw a good ball given time, not strong, but can make the quick decision and distribute the ball, and sometimes "guts" out a win (the kid won 45 games in college).

As a note, I was in favor of letting Colt get a chance way back when, but fully aware that this would basically be his ceiling. We're just seeing it with a different name/number now.

I'm certainly not a Colt McCoy fan and never was, but at least Colt had mobility and the ability to scramble for yardage. Hoyer is basically an immobile version of McCoy.

A lot of people, around here included, wanted to build around Hoyer based on a couple of decent games last year before the knee. They were further fed when he had a couple decent games early on this year.

I'm well aware, bud. I was being sarcastic. I was one of the individuals that did not want to draft a 1st round QB because I felt that with the proper supporting cast Hoyer could be effective enough to win us some games.
I don't think anyone on this board considers or has ever considered him our "franchise" QB. I remember the actual post from Tsteele when I made reference as such and he called it the "myth". I still don't believe its a myth. Johnny came in under some bad circumstances and had a few decent plays that the offense responded well to. It was good to see his comfort in giving audibles at the line. I don't believe its accurate saying the team has won despite Brian. Clearly there have been a few games where we needed some clutch throws he has delivered on. Hoyer has also done a great deal to help instill a sense of belief in this team that they can be good.

I'm not sure how the QB situation will shake out but with this coaching staff, whoever gives us the best shot at a W I'm certain will play.

The great ones never hold on to the ball too long. They quickly go through their read progressions and if nothing is there they throw it away. I basically only get to see the Browns on the redzone channel, but even with that limited sample I end up screaming at the TV for Hoyer to get rid of the ball. When you have such a shitty offense, any sack is a drive killer. Sorry for stating the obvious. I don't think this leopard can ever change his spots.

To be fair, if we're using the pitcher comparison, he does strike a guy out or two in the clutch from time to time... and well, Brandon Weeden... was... just... that... bad.

Browns fans think that Hoyer is so great because the bar is so damned low: Weeden ... Campbell ... Delhomme ... Quinn ... Frye ... ad nauseum

Hoyer might be the best of the bunch since 1999, but that still doesn't make him anything better than an average journeyman NFL quarterback.

I only mention Weeden due to the similarities (though maybe not a fair comparison... maybe to ether of them, they are somewhat different) in supporting cast.

And I'm not disagreeing with anything you're saying... personally, I wanted him to be an above average journeyman NFL quarterback. What I wanted this year was a good enough team around whoever the QB was to go 8-8 or so. I also get that the NFL is a passing league and its a QB league and all that but, how many legit long term franchise QB's are out there? In the grand scheme of things, Matt Stafford and Andy Dalton aren't in some rarified air that separates them from Hoyer... and I guess my point is that Hoyer is sqarely in the bottom third of QB's. And there's a good amount of junk in the middle third.... I guess we just know those guys have fleas already. Hoyer does too. Having said all that, I'd prefer they let him play out (or into) the playoffs this year before we see Manziel. (not a strong preference, just a preference).

I can see it from both sides. Hoyer has played his worst games against teams with strong DL's and that shouldn't be as much of a problem for the remainder of the season. I also don't think because Manziel came in and drove down the field for a TD that he is the better option. The reason the wildcat works in spurts is because you change-up what the defense is prepared for. It took the Bills a series, but I think they became more disciplined with their pass rush and locked down Manziel after the first series. If the Browns really wanted to fuck with the Bills they should have put Hoyer back in running the no huddle after the Manziel TD.

In a perfect world the Browns would have never wasted a pick on Manziel and we would have one extra contributing player (like a Kelvin Benjamin) this whole season. They did pick Manziel and he has sat on the bench all season, which is probably long enough to learn what he needs to learn. Unless they have a standing trade offer for him after the season they might as well throw him out there and see what he can do. If Hoyer is the problem they can let him walk after the season and go with Shaw or the Dragon as the backup. If they end up going 7-9 and Manziel sucks or gets split in half by an NFL defense they can throw a Dalton-ish contract at Hoyer and know he is the lesser of 2 evils.

The Browns aren't going to win the Super Bowl this year so they might as well use the remaining games to figure out what they have so they know what they need to do this off season. Sticking with Hoyer for the rest of the season just means they they are 100% stuck with one of the 2 QB's currently on the roster with the very real possibility that neither are the answer.

Charlie owns Smittie's Citgo near Willard OH ??
Good for him

With whatever he made with the Browns & Oakland
Charlie now owns every piece of property in Willard (and most of Huron county)

Frye's NFL legacy may end up being.. THE person responsible for Domenic Hixon being in the NFL
