Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

Went to a Browns/Steelers party. Have to say, Browns fans don't know how to win. They sat in silence taking personal inventories of their lives. No [Mark May] talking. No bragging. WTF? They all had a look in their eye like "do I have enough food in the bunker?"

Come on.
At 31-3 I went to the gas station to make sure I had 3 days fuel for my generator.

I think this has to be my favorite post from this thread.
I'm starting to come around some, but then I remember Derek Anderson looked pretty damn good for a couple of months in 2007 against a similar run of tomato can defenses. One thing is for certain, the OL and running game is possibly in the best shape it's been in since the rebirth, and that bodes well for this team's chances to actually sniff the postseason. If Crowell can just hang on to the damn ball, they go legitimately three deep at RB.

4 deep if you'd like to include Winston. He showed well for San Fran and I think he'd produce if his name was ever called.

The only didn't crash and burn after losing the biggest cog. The WR's are giving 110% and it can only get better for them when Gordon returns.

I'm still skeptical of this defense. However I do appreciate Pettine and O'neils honesty with themselves. They can't blitz with this personnel as much as they'd like. The secondary doesn't have a dominant #2 CB or a dominant pass rush. So it will boil down to playing with heart and discipline.

I also ass Kruger went back to his little jump step while trying to pass rush. The guy needs to learn he's doing himself no favors by keeping that shit up.

So given how things are going with Dallas, I'm assuming all the talk of "the trade" is off the table? At least until the off-season**, and then it'll be another round of ESPiN hawking their favorites and Manziel will be all but forgotten. I assume they'll be under pressure to pick up the latest greatest product within that state - Petty - if he's available anywhere near their draft spot.

**and just as well imo this team needs 2 guys who can legitimately step in at QB even if I think Manziel is the very definition of over-rated)

Sadly it would be off the table. I'm not sure who mentioned it but it's a fair point to bring up that this front office envisions Manziel in the mold of Wilson in Seattle. At least those offensive concepts. So I very much doubt there will be a trade. Would I like to sign Hoyer to some kind of team friendly 3-4 year deal? Absolutely. I have every belief he'd take a home town discount. Then Foosball can channel his inner Rodgers, ride the pine for a few years and work on his craft. This will give ample time for the front office to put a couple more weapons in place on offense and (lord willing) a few more difference makers on defense.

As for the comparisons to DA. I hear ya. I was thinking similar things the other day. I guess I can say the only differences are that Hoyer doesn't have the deep ball, but he does seem to make better decisions while having fewer tools to work with at WR.

edit: Big hypothetical. If Hoyer keeps up this kind of play, what are the chances he's a pro bowl alt?

One big difference working in their favor for long-term success, Re: Hoyer/Anderson, is that Hoyer is being counted on to mainly be a game manager, whereas Anderson and the passing game was what made that team go, and ultimately fail, in 2007. This team has a terrific stable of young backs. What remains to be seen is how much the Mack injury will affect them. And I don't think we'll know that until we play the Bungles in 4 weeks, because there's a few tomato cans in front of them now.

As for Manziel/Hoyer...it's obviously Hoyer's team for now. He's not going to wow you, but he's proving to be an excellent game manager who can hit some big throws when needed. If he does re-sign, and I would think there'd be some kind of hometown discount as he's on his way to being a folk hero in Cleveland, that's great for Manziel. Let him learn under a vet, work on his weaknesses, then maybe a couple years down the road he gets his shot. Hopefully on a team that has tasted a lot of success and has solid pieces around him.

Anyway...they're still fucking shitty.

They'll feel Mack's absence more in the passing game than the running game. The other 4 starters have to stay healthy or else performance will suffer. Mack going down is going to effect Schwartz the most since he's losing Greco and getting McQuistan next to him. I think Greco will do fine at center.

I just hope Mack is able to get back to 100% for next year. Often times broken legs end up being career altering injuries.

Well, right, the next task is to be able to hold serve. Which is cool because you get to serve... whatever... tennis analogies never end well.

Either way, my thought at the beginning of this little 5 game stretch between the Bye and the Bengals game was to somehow get out of it 4-1, which with one game being the Steelers, and 2 on the road would be very good for them, and I still think that... but, I'd have taken 6-3 so, I'll still take it. The long and the short of it though is, that should end up being a Thursday night game in November of some consequence... and that's a very good thing.

They're still shitty, so I still don't expect them to get in the playoffs. This division is too good (Yeah, I know but seriously, after the Colts, Denver, the Chargers and the Jeckyl Version of the Patriots, who in the AFC is better than anyone in the North?)

Edit, I really don't think the division is too good, I didn't finish my thoughts but, anyway point being that there's not a lot of margin for error, much like 2007, 9-7 probably won't do it. 10-6 they'll need help so the point is they have good teams to play to get the tiebreakers, that is all... of course that would require a curb stomping of the Ravens at home, which... I'm very in favor of.
