Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

Media really wants pettine to wait another game w/o realizing thats half the problem... thats why qb controversies are so destructive.
You have 2 qbs with very different styles and limitations splitting time in practice and wondering why they're both underperforming.
Pick one and start preparing for the season nlow.

This is what I think. If they name Hoyer the starter and give him the starters practice reps this week I would expect a much better performance on Saturday. Give Manziel the backup reps and maybe a couple practice series with the 1's to work on his plays if they want to continue to work him in games with the read option.

Hoyer has limitations, but he sees the field and makes quick decisions that will prevent opposing DC's from loading the box and forcing him to throw. If Manziel starts he is going to be facing the blitz until he proves that he can make the correct hot reads and burn the D. I would expect the running game to look better with Hoyer forcing the D to play honest. The only thing Manziel can do to hold the D is to sell the boot on every running play.

If anything the finger incident from last night should help sell Hoyer since Manziel lack the maturity needed to lead an NFL team. Make him ride the bench and earn his reps.

This. Hoyer see's the field better, identifies his hots much easier and isn't the risk for pick six's that Manziel was last night.

edit: Some positive take aways. If the refs wouldn't be so overboard with the flags in the regular season, this defense is top 10. Maybe top 5. The rush defense is legit. Roberston doesn't look terrible which is nice. Kruger fires off the ball worlds faster. No more jump step and waiting for the tackle to respond. He had some decent pressures and the sack.

Mingo plays a bit reckless. He's very, very fast and sometimes relies on that too make up for being out of position. He does fly to the ball though. He won't face any other QB's as fast as RG3. So that rollout he played perfectly should result in a sack. Tighten up that spin move. When he came in on that pass/catch to Jackson, he spun off the tackle, if he doesn't swing so wide he'll basically be right in Griffin's back pocket.

Armonty Bryant is a 2nd string monster. The pass rush fell off a bit on the 2nd team but this kid combined with Billy Winn will pick that up.

Gipson still looks good playing the deep middle and Jim Leonard is a quality backup. Gilbert looks like he belongs as well. Just need to learn to get your head around, even if its at the last moment.

I like Hoyer but he misses the easy ones.. overthrows or throws behind
I like Manziel because of his of his improvisation... I worry about Manziel because of his improvisation...
BOTH will have a propensity for INTs and doubly so because their receivers don't help

Shaw is actually a bit like Manziel but I like Shaw's throwing motion more
Won't be surprised if Grossman is the teams QB by week 4

Good news is - Haslam got what he wanted. The marketing ploy has worked. Tickets have been sold, the media has taken Cleveland by storm and I can't remember the last time the Browns had this much coverage.

Bad news for all those fans who paid the ridiculous price for the first preseason home game to get 3 quarters of Brian Hoyer though
