The more tape I watch on Mingo, the more the pick worries me.

He might be something in 3-4 years, or maybe as few as two, but unless it's a QB, drafting a guy in the top 10 and not getting that player to be an impact guy his rookie season is a failure IMO.

Maybe he'll play better in the pros with some time to develop and within the system. We'll see.

The only issue with a good 'system' pick is just that. System.

We might have Horton for 2 years. Beyond that we just don't know.
The guy has aspirations of being a head coach. So if Mingo is to have
Career longevity in Cleveland, the next DC will have to be of a similar scheme
And mindset.

If the scheme works and Horton gets a HC job you just find someone else to run it. No blowing it up.

To this point the 4-3 seemed to be working given that they were only 2 years removed from a 3-4...my uneducated eyes would have said to bring in another 4-3 guy and continue building but they didnt. If Horton leaves to become a HC anywhere besides Cleveland, I see this team doing the stupid thing and try to convert back to a 4-3

Chud and Haslam wanted a 3-4 so they picked a DC that would run it. If Horton leaves chances are they would find someone else to run the 3-4. Now if they suck for the next few years and fire Chud all bets are off.

Just making sure we didn't somehow miss that the first go-round'...

edit: It would take tons of development for Mingo to survive a scheme switch and essentially become
Von Miller or Bruce Irvin. Those guys played the joker nearly their entire college careers. Mingo, outside
of a handful of plays here and there, is very limited in his exposing to dropping back.

I would say, based on his very slender build, Mingo could put on enough weight to play a 4-3 DE.

Yeah, I mean, people are concerned about his size, but to some degree, its probably in his favor that he can play Linebacker at something closer to what his natural weight would be....

Having said all that, I'm concerned as well that there's not a whole heck of a lot of tape on the kid in coverage, as far as technique and understanding of his role... I have little doubt athletically that he can handle it, he seems to move very well in space. But, this is one of those things that you don't know if there's a hole in his game or not, because quite frankly, its not there to watch. So, yeah, I mean, you wonder if you should be taking a guy at 6 that's got a major part of his resume blank.

But here we are.

He does seem to be quite bright. If he's coachable, he could end up being great in coverage with all the talent he has.

I'm willing to wait until the regular season before I make any judgement about Mingo or the other draft picks for that matter. He seems to be a smart well spoken kid so hopefully the guys that matter saw what they needed to in the film and he is worthy of the #6 pick.

With Sheard and Kruger he shouldn't be asked to do too much more than pass rush this year. All three are going to need to be coached up on dropping into coverage and Mingo is the most athletic of them all.

I'll keep saying that I won't be shocked to see a nickel lineup with Kruger, Taylor/Winn, Sheard, and Mingo on the DL with some funky blitz looks.

Drafting for need is a horrible mistake, it's the same thing that led the Bengals to become the Bungles. Just a read an article on them how when they needed a WR they drafted Jerome Simpson in the 2nd and Andre Caldwell in the 3rd.

You draft based on talent....get the most talent on the field, if you have a surplus at one spot you either keep it as a strength or deal to balance it out. But when I hear "i'd draft this position in the first, then this in the 2nd, 3rd, etc." it is a trap that can set teams back for years.
