Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

With a top 5 pick this year, I think you have a great chance to get a franchise QB to build around. But there's only 2 real possibilities I think - RGIII and Barkley, then the QBs drop off from there. If no QB then I think a OL/DL would be a great pick.

And the Browns will get a top 15 1st round pick next year, am I right? I can't imagine the Browns being a better than average NFL team next year. So maybe Montario Hardesty gets healthy (why did they get him???) and becomes the RB of 2012. Then if he doesn't, you can use a top 15 pick on an RB.

As for chosing a QB, I think it's a "chicken or the egg" argument. I don't think McCoy is the longterm answer at QB, but I think they should try to get him some weapons and a passable OL. I think he could be at least serviceable with that. RGIII is not a WCO QB, IMO. I wouldn't be upset with Barkley, but, again, what can you expect from him with a bad OL, mediocre WR, and no running game? Hardesty has shown nothing to indicate he's more than a 3.5 ypc backup NFL RB. Not to mention he looks like a perpetual injury risk.

There are so many holes on this offense that there's several ways they could go at #4 (if they end up there), and it's really a matter of preference. I happen to think they should try to get a good RB, and I think Richardson is that. He's a hard runner, can succeed between the tackles, and has enough speed to kick it outside if needed. He's also a pretty good receiver, a big part of being a successful WCO RB. I don't think there's any WR worth taking that high except Blackmon, and most projections have him gone by #4. They could concievably get a pretty good WR with the ATL 1 next year (maybe Floyd), or go OL, or fill a defensive need there. I think getting an offensive weapon at #4 HAS to be a priority. They have no one that defenses need to account for.

I'm not really well versed on next years FA crop, so that will likely impact things as well.

List of 2012 free agents...qb wise its jason campbell or matt flynn...i wouldnt mind flynn to compete with mccoy...this is if we dont draft a qb which i still think we will...some good names on there especially at WR and RB...one name which i see on there is desean jackson...because heckert drafted him i wonder if he would go after him...not saying i want jackson ....guy is a drama queen and would hate playing in cleveland...but we need a WR like him to stretch the field so in that aspect it makes sense

From what I've heard, Flynn is expected to be in demand, so he's probably going to be pretty pricey. Doubt he is brought in purely for "competition". QB may indeed end up being the way they go...it doesn't seem like Shurmur is much of a Colt fan. So, Barkley may end up being the guy. Like I said, I'd prefer Richardson, but wouldn't be upset if they took Barkley...so long as RB is addressed at some point.

The Browns need to protect Colt and get some play makers around him if he is going to remotely have a chance of being successful.

Agree 100%. I was talking to a friend tonight who is a Patriots fan. We agreed the QB position in Cleveland is never going to look good without some decent receivers, a good RB and a stronger line. Drafting another QB is just putting lipstick on a pig at this point.

Its impossible to judge Colt at this point. he is running for his life on every play, he has absolutely no play makers around him.
you could throw Rodgers out there with this team and they wouldn't look any better...

I agree that you have to upgrade RB, OL, and WR too. But you can start off with a new QB and work on the other stuff later. With your #4 pick you can have the 2nd best QB in the draft, that doesn't come along too often. I would go for that and then work on the other stuff later. Like pick up a WR in FA and use the ATL pick for a OL.

But the talk of getting Trent Richardson with the #4 pick sounds great too...

I don't think he's had a fair shot to see what he really has. But, that said, even when he has had time this year, he hasn't looked very good. I've seen him miss open guys, I've seen some bad decisions (throwing into double & triple coverage), I've seen some really bad throws that indicate he might not have the arm to be a consistently good nfl QB. That is alarming, to me. I'm pretty sure he isn't the long term answer, but I think there are more pressing needs, and I'd prefer to have our "long term" qb walk into better conditions than they have, or likely will have next year.

Given that the offense looked better under Seneca Wallace Sunday isn't a good thing, RE: Colt's ability...my IMO.

That's been their strategy with everybody since 1999 and it hasn't worked...at all. Couch got pummeled into submission, Frye, Quinn, etc ran for their lives and had no one to throw to...it's just not a good strategy to try to develop a QB with nothing around them. Concievably, they could draft Barkley and let him sit under Colt/Wallace until they upgrade the OL and skill positions, but then you're spending a pick that could be used upgrading those positions immediately.

It's just sad that 13 years in, they are in such poor shape. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I have a very hard time thinking of one legitimate sustained skill position player worth mentioning since 1999. That is criminal.

This is how I feel too. Colt is running for his life, because he's bad at what he does. No one is afraid that he can accurately throw it further than 15-20 yards, and they blitz the shit out of him because they know he'll panic. Wallace is clearly just another guy at QB, but at least he looks competent.

Having said that. If we draft a QB in the first round this year, he will not be allowed to sit until we get the other pieces in place. So I am all for letting some meat bag take the beating at QB until we can get some of the other shit fixed with this offense.

If the Browns can get Blackmon I would do it, otherwise I want Richardson. I wouldn't want any of the QB's besides Luck, but I don't want to pay the price to trade up for him. If they can somehow turn the Falcon's pick into Floyd it would be a golden first round even if they had to trade up a little to get him. If Floyd is gone by the time the Brown's second pick comes up I don't want a WR this year with the exception of Posey, but the Browns will never draft a Buckeye.
I would have to think that they could fill DE and one OLB through FA, which leaves RT, CB, and another OLB in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. They might want to throw in a project QB in the 4th if there is one. I'm not sold on McCoy, but this is a great year to fill in a lot of holes, which they won't be able to do by drafting one of the QB's. If McCoy still can't get it done next year then they will still have a bad enough record to go after a top QB next year. At least at that point they will hopefully have a young group of skill players to give the next QB an easier time.

Not many people think Blackmon will be there, so I'm not even holding out hope on that one.

I agree about QB. I like Barkley, but I don't know if he's worth spending a #4 pick on when, in all reality, he shouldn't even be allowed to play that first year given what he'd be working with. More QBs will come along in future drafts, and I'd be willing to bet a hefty sum the clowns are picking top-10 again in 2013. Use the pick on somebody that can help immediately. Draft a QB when he would have a worthwhile supporting cast.

Tim. Couch.

Brady. Quinn.

Charlie. Frye.

You can win with a serviceable QB, a good running game and a stout defense. The defense is ok right now, they have no running game and while Colt will never be Steve Young or even Steve Walsh, I think he's at least serviceable.

The defense is passable for the state they're in right now...but that's just because the offense is so pathetic opposing offense don't really have to attack too much. They still desperately need a CB to play opposite Haden and LB help.
