Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

The defense is passable for the state they're in right now...but that's just because the offense is so pathetic opposing offense don't really have to attack too much. They still desperately need a CB to play opposite Haden and LB help.

By all means yes. And maybe a pass rusher who can get to the QB with something akin to regularity.

This Mock has the Browns taking UNC's pass rushing end and with the Falcons Pick, UGA's Right Guard. No skill/speek players available. :(

What am I missing here? We're not winning another game this season, but these guys have us drafting 8th? The worst we can do with 4 wins is 6th, right?

Right now the browns would be picking between 4-6 (as opposed to 8 in that un-updated mock). Right now, the Browns have the same record as Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. Doubt the browns beat pit/@bal. Jacksonville should win @Ten or vs Indy. Tampa Bay's games (@Car/@Atl) are more difficult.

So the browns will probably get the 4th or 5th pick. Which would allow them to take one of the QBs if they wanted.

Sorry but I don't see Peyton Manning in this years draft. Barkley (imho) hasn't shown me enough to say "damn, can't miss this kid".

Take the 49'ers blue print. Run the ball effectively. Protect the QB. Setup Play action. Play sound defense.

Blackmon. Richardson. Floyd. RT. CB. OLB. DE. FS. - in that order.

That will work when we already have 2 decent QBs!:smash:

taking justin blackmon in the top 5 is a huge reach. he's nowhere near on par with aj green or julio jones. it would be a bad pick overall. if cleveland has no desire to take qb at #4, then they should be shopping that pick.

I guess the question is if you think blackmon is a reach that high up how far are you willing to trade down and what specific area (player) would you pick.

tsteele,

Overall I would not take him at number 4 either based on the Browns needs overall. The Browns still need alot of players and based on the 2012 FA market, I don't see too many guys that would be good fits for this team. To be honest, I saw more fits last year.

I kind of like what Buckeneye posted earlier in the thread:

Blackmon. Richardson. Floyd. RT. CB. OLB. DE. FS. - in that order.

However, I would switch Richardson and Blackmon. Personally, I would like to see Hillis re-signed and Richardson drafted with the Browns 1st pick. Nice 1 - 2 punch and from what I have been reading Hillis may have adjusted his line of thinking on leaving Cleveland.

Then hope Floyd falls to them in the late 1st (hopefully the Falcons lose their last two to make it more probable). A few mocks show hime available anywhere from 16 -25.

I would go get a GOOD RT in FA or via trade, not draft one. But from the early 2nd through the remainder of the draft I would go defense: OLB, DE, and CB. Overall, the Cleveland defense has been reasonalby good with the exception of pass rush and stopping the run. They have been really weak on the edges as far as the run goes. So they need to get faster on the edge.

Not tsteele but while I agree with most of your post, I do not think that we will see Hillis has a Cleveland Brown next year unless he is willing to come way down in what he was initially asking. Plus, his agent is not user friendly.

The Browns will have to use some of their money to re-sign Jackson and hopefully Dawson next year. Peyton has sort of a rumbling stumbling running style and I would rather see someone else in his place.

i have no desire to watch peyton hillis run for the browns after this season. he's only respectable in a straight line, and even that's a push.

history shows that taking a wr top 10 is at best a risky proposition, and the ones that do pan out are physical freaks like fitz, megatron, andre johnson and aj green. justin blackmon simply isn't in that talent class. he's not even in dez bryant's talent class. picking him 4th is a big whiff and a stretch for need.

I would also posit that RDE is a much bigger need than another safety or even RT. Jayme Mitchell is rated as the worst starting DE in the NFL by profootball focus. concurrently, when you look at tony pashos' actual game performances, he's not nearly as bad as people try to project. it's just a factor of when he botches something, it's a highlight type botching.

Maybe we need another guard not tackle

Terry Pluto's take
1. Make of this what you will: Profootballfocus.com ranks Joe Thomas No. 1 and Tony Pashos No. 6 among all offensive tackles in their "pass blocking efficiency" ratings. It says Thomas has allowed three sacks, one quarterback hit and 15 hurries in 527 pass-blocking snaps for a 97.2 rating. Right behind him are the Bengals' Andrew Whitworth and Tennessee's David Stewart. Atlanta's Tyson Clabo is No. 4, followed by Tyson Smith of Dallas and then Pashos.

2. So why has Colt McCoy taken such a pounding? The website ranks guard Shawn Lauvao at No. 55 and guard Jason Pinkston at No. 69 in terms of pass blocking. Center Alex Mack ranks 12th, so the guards have been the trouble spots, as was right tackle when Pashos was hurt as Artis Hicks and Oniel Cousins filled in.

3. A month ago, I wrote about Eric Steinbach coming back strong from his back surgery and the Browns expecting him to return to left guard. That would allow Pinkston to provide depth at right tackle. I'd still like to see the Browns sign a solid offensive lineman or take one in the first three rounds of April's draft. Linemen are like starting pitchers -- you think you need only five, but usually a few are injured.

Ok so. We need to address RG and LG. Steinbach isn't getting any younger.
Then again neither is Pashos. So lets stock up on weapons.

I'll take Richardson & Floyd for 500 Alex.

Just a question - am I the only one who feels Obannaya could make a decent #2?

He's a tough runner and has pretty good hands. Much better then some other RB's on the Browns roster I could name.

edit: I want Chase Minnifield on roster next year. Yes, just for the name sake even.

Barkley says he's not entering the 2012 draft. That throws a wrench into things as I think he was the only viable QB candidate at #4. RGIII doesn't really fit a WCO system and Luck won't be there. Gotta think Richardson would be the main target now...
