Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

more about the holding teams to 10 points instead of 43 factor.

Where did I say the defense THIS year will be able to do that on a consistent basis?

There isn't a magic bullet or a singular player that would instantly make the Browns better. They needed to rebuild their entire roster and with the number of picks they fleeced Atlanta for, they are well on their way to do it.

I have to say, Jones to a contender is a great thing for that team...Jones to the Browns right now is a waste. 45 catches, 760 yards, 6 TDs...not getting us to the playoffs. We need defensive pieces, not one receiver.

That's why I would have kept the third round pick and been happy with Wilkinson instead of Taylor.

But this is where part of the FO's and a lot FO's make their money. They obviously had Taylor ranked much higher and went after the guy that they had rated higher. Similar to when they took TJ Ward in the 2nd last year when Taylor Mays was there.

edit: All that I'm really trying to say is that the new front office has a plan. They trust their scouting department. I don't necessarily agree with using the 3rd rounder to move up to get Phil Taylor but they trust their scouting and when "their guy" is there they go after them and take them.

Just like people whining about the Browns not going out and signing over priced FA's this offseason. A couple marginal guys here and there is not going to put this team over the top. They are young and building, at least for once the front office seems to have a plan and place and actually sticking to it.

The FO is getting a lot of grace out of the Ward pick. Let's hope Taylor works out better than the trade up for Montario Hardisty (SP?) pick. I guess we will find out this year if that was a complete waste.

We'll Taylor made it through his first preseason game so does that make him a better trade up than Hardesty? I would have had no problem skipping the trade up and drafting Heyward in the first.

Not just the Ward pick. But Haden as well. I wanted Berry (we all did) and while most of us knew he was a gamer - we still had doubts. The FO didnt and it looks like we have one of the better young CB's in the league now.

If (When?) Hardesty comes through to be a contributor, I'd call that a pretty big hit rate.

Most people who follow the NFL say it takes at least 3 seasons before you can start to really see how a draft went. This FO seems to be making moves that will move the franchise forward. Playing young guys and figuring out who can help you and who can't, is a big part of moving the Browns ahead. So hopefully guys like Hardesty, C. Mitchell, B. Skrine, Sheard, Little, Taylor, Lauvo, others will be able to step up and show they can play. If not then you can start to rag on how this FO has drafted in two years. Till then I'm not going to worry so much about how/where/or what round they drafted these guys but if they are actually improving and producing on the field.

look at the first 5 picks of the 2010 draft:

joe haden - starter, very good rookie year
tj ward - starter, very good rookie year
montario hardesty - missed rookie year with injury
colt mccoy - starting qb. franchise qb? probably not. good enough to get the team to the playoffs? TBD.
shaun lauvao - injured rookie year, and for some reason got into mangini's doghouse. now starter at RG who is having a great camp by all reports, and who totally mauled that poor DT from green bay on hillis' TD run.

it's hard to argue with what looks to be an 80% hit rate on those draft picks. those 4 alone, regardless of hardesty, earns the front office quite a bit of credit in my book.

Don't forget McCoy on the plus side. Colt appears to be another steal. Haden was a #7 overall pick, and most mock draft had us picking him. As a result, i can't count that as any real stroke of genius.

I bring up Hardesty because we knew his injury history and still gave up another high pick to get him. I hope Luvalo (SP?) works out. He appeared to be over matched last year by better D-linemen, but he's young.

They're also getting a lot of slack because of the asstacular 2009 draft of the people who came before them...blowing a 2nd rounder on David Fucking Veikune alone should give this crew at least 5 years to prove they don't suck that bad.
