Julio Jones wouldn't have put the Browns at square one, square two, or anything after that. He likely puts them in limbo.
Here are the WRs that have been drafted in the Top 6 since the Browns returned to the league in 1999:
- Torry Holt
- Peter Warrick
- Andre Johnson
- Charles Rogers
- Larry Fitzgerald
- Calvin Johnson
Only two of those guys have ever made it to the playoffs with the team that drafted them (Holt, Fitzgerald).
What did they have in common?
The odds are stacked against bad teams who use a high pick on a WR. The only two teams that have found success with that recipe happened to have a future HOF QB fall into their laps to complement the pick.
While there is not a recent precedent for good teams moving up in the draft to take a WR, Torry Holt is probably a pretty good comp for Julio Jones with the Falcons. The Rams were lousy before they drafted Holt, but they didn't get good because of his arrival. He was arguably the third option in an offense that featured Isaac Bruce and the also newly added Marshall Faulk. Jones is entering a similar situation in Atlanta. He won't have to be "the man" like he would have in Cleveland because they already have Roddy White and Michael Turner.
The truth is, if the Browns are indeed at square one, they are ahead of wherever they've been at any point since returning to the league. To even be at square one it implies that there is at least some kind of plan and some kind of goal in place. That's something that hasn't happened with this franchise in a couple decades.
