Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

Probably. Though, at least Heckert & the Big Show appear to have a plan that they're sticking to. So, that's different, and we do have a boat load of draft picks next year to continue plugging holes...

Julio Jones wouldn't have put the Browns at square one, square two, or anything after that. He likely puts them in limbo.

Here are the WRs that have been drafted in the Top 6 since the Browns returned to the league in 1999:

  • Torry Holt
  • Peter Warrick
  • Andre Johnson
  • Charles Rogers
  • Larry Fitzgerald
  • Calvin Johnson
Only two of those guys have ever made it to the playoffs with the team that drafted them (Holt, Fitzgerald). What did they have in common?

The odds are stacked against bad teams who use a high pick on a WR. The only two teams that have found success with that recipe happened to have a future HOF QB fall into their laps to complement the pick.

While there is not a recent precedent for good teams moving up in the draft to take a WR, Torry Holt is probably a pretty good comp for Julio Jones with the Falcons. The Rams were lousy before they drafted Holt, but they didn't get good because of his arrival. He was arguably the third option in an offense that featured Isaac Bruce and the also newly added Marshall Faulk. Jones is entering a similar situation in Atlanta. He won't have to be "the man" like he would have in Cleveland because they already have Roddy White and Michael Turner.

The truth is, if the Browns are indeed at square one, they are ahead of wherever they've been at any point since returning to the league. To even be at square one it implies that there is at least some kind of plan and some kind of goal in place. That's something that hasn't happened with this franchise in a couple decades.

I agree with your assessment JLB, the trade made in this year's draft was best for both teams. The Browns get a boatload of picks to build their team of the future and the Falcons get another play-maker that can help them now, as well as be a replacement for White when he retires.

I watched quite a few of his college games.. dude has stone hands.... he'll make a few but right now... he's a younger version of Roy Williams... right now we fleeced the Falcons...

Yes i'll eat my words if he blows up...

No thanks.

I'd rather win games 13-10 with good defense than lose them 43-35. Jones is going to into a good situation as JLB points out. The Browns aren't in that situation.

Jones would end up (on the field at least) as Braylon 2.0 without teh ghey. I'll pass.

While a bonafide #1 WR is lacking, it won't cure all that ails this team.

Like pointed out, still holes that need filled. However (IMHO) we're on the right track for the first time since drafting Joe Thomas (Which sadly we also took Quinn).

Taylor looked pretty solid with Rubin. Get more out of Mitchell and Sheard and you've got the makings of how you win the AFC north - defense. More specifically Dline.

We'll know volumes more about what this team lacks by midseason.

That said. I'm not shedding a tear about not getting Julio Jones or really any WR this draft. Because Justin Blackmon is on next years board

He looked pretty good to me. :wink2:

As for his hands, there has been no reported drops from him in practice. You have to remember that he was playing with an inept quarterback that would often not throw the ball in good spots, forcing Jones to reach behind himself to make catches.

In what way? Jones may very well have an excellent season, but it will be (at least partially) because he's surrounded by Pro Bowl talent in Atlanta. Put him on the Browns, and he gets double covered and in all likelihood isn't nearly as productive. Either way, it's best to move on. I have. jlb made an excellent post above that I agree with fully. This team needs so much more help than one WR and they loaded up with oppportunities to get it by trading away from Julio Jones.

FWIW, I've discovered that the Browns now have an official iPhone app:

BuckeyeMike80 did use the plural "win games". That might come back to haunt.
