Cleveland Browns (2011 season)

Well, hopefully he's a steal then. Getting a guy like Marecic makes me 'tard happy anyway with visions of him and Thomas leading Hillis on an old school sweep play, anything after that is gravy.

So much negativity in what I don't think has been a bad draft at all. Maybe not great, but they've gotten lots of talented players at positions of need. Big names? No. But it appears they've gotten players they've liked, and they're clearly talented for the most part.

Only one I have no idea about is Pinkston. But they traded up to get him, so apparently he was a player they targeted.

Again, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until I have a reason to doubt their picks.

That's nice and all, but I need to know more than "he's fast". I've never heard his name anywhere. I mean, I guess it's only the 5th round and all, but there were better players out there at other positions of need (G. Jones?)...

PFW has some nice youtube vids. Here is their scouting report on Skrine.

Really? A project QB? Christ, I'd hope not...

I really do not understand the project QB notion when you have other, much more pressing needs. I am a giant Bears fan and the Bears need help and depth at offensive line, everywhere on defense, and wide receiver. Rather than drafting someone who can actually help them, they take a quarterback from Idaho in the 5th round who will be a career back up (best case scenario). Back to the Browns, I would much rather take a chance on a defensive or offensive play-maker (cough cough Dane cough cough) rather than take some project QB who might not even make the team.

Name an opponent in the division that had a better draft than the Browns last year.

Tough question to answer, Ravens and Steelers are super Bowl contenders, it's not unusual for great draft picks to sit the bench for years. A good example is Colt Mcoy, where else in the division does he start?

Going into the draft, how many picks did we have , 11? We were drafting at the top of every round, our draft should be better than anyone in our division. As bad as our personnel is, you should expect starters with that many picks in the top 100 players.

Conversely, those guys on the bench for other teams may contribute as little as any of the Browns picks that miss - but nobody notices or minds since those guys on the other teams are not being pressed into important roles, only being asked to provide depth.

It's true - if you draft even halfway decent you should be able to find starters when the bar is set so low by the incumbent personnel. It's also true (as you pointed out with McCoy) that just because you've found a starter that doesn't mean you're not still behind your division peers in that area. To me that doesn't mean that last year's draft wasn't a net positive for the team. I guess I'm looking at a franchise like Green Bay who built a champion through the draft. How many drafts did they take to get all of the important pieces for that team? They've consistently collected starters and/or contributors over a number of drafts. It's not as if they want out and had one big home run draft and rode it to glory. I think if the Browns can repeat the gains realized in rounds 1-3 last year over multiple drafts (even with an occasional mistake like Hardesty thrown in) they will be on the right trajectory to become a contender.
