Browns pay Ram's guarantee little mind

BEREA ? Randy McMichael is guaranteeing victory Sunday for the winless St. Louis Rams over the Cleveland Browns.
"We have nothing else to say," McMichael told St. Louis reporters. "We're going to win the football game."

Wednesday, the Browns' collective reaction could be summed up in one word: "Who?"

Inside knowledge
Browns quarterback Derek Anderson and Rams running back Steven Jackson were roommates at Oregon State as freshmen. Anderson said they spoke on the phone two weeks ago.
Jackson, who has been out with a groin injury, said he plans to play Sunday. The Browns have never faced him.
"He's a physical guy, 235 pounds and lean," Anderson said. "He doesn't quit, either. You've got to tackle him."
Sorensen signed
To take Baxter's roster spot, the Browns signed defensive back Nick Sorensen, a six-year veteran who has played in 75 games with St. Louis and Jacksonville, primarily on special teams.

Baxter, a Browns cornerback, underwent surgery on Oct. 24 the past two years. In 2005, it was for a torn pectoral muscle. In 2006, it was to repair torn patellar tendons in both knees.

BROWNS: Rams have missed Jackson
Thursday, October 25, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA The Browns only can daydream that Brady Quinn is this year?s Steven Jackson ? the draft pick who should never have been a 20-something.

Quinn slipped to No. 22 in April, but was he a steal? He isn?t playing because Derek Anderson has surprised.

Jackson ? Anderson?s former Oregon State roommate ? is back from a four-week injury absence, eager to help the Rams beat Cleveland on Sunday.

Ex-Falcon Jackson may be on Browns radar
JEFF SCHUDEL, Morning Journal Writer
10/25/2007

BEREA -- The Browns' struggle to improve run defense could be resolved if they decide they can be helped by Grady Jackson, a 350-pound nose tackle released Tuesday by the Atlanta Falcons.

Jackson, 34, is in his 11th season -- young compared to Browns' 39-year-old nose tackle Ted Washington.

Jackson started 22 of the last 23 games for the Falcons. He is tied for the team lead among defensive linemen with 18 tackles and he has 5.5 tackles for loss. He is considered a run stopper.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns are learning that respect is a gradual process in the NFL. Despite the team's unexpected resurgence, the winless St. Louis Rams weren't shy about providing the Browns with bulletin-board material yesterday when tight end Randy McMichael guaranteed a victory.

Numbers tell the tale after first six games Players' optimism, talk of playoff possibilities give Browns different slant
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Oct 26, 2007
BEREA: Browns General Manager Phil Savage came armed with statistics about the team's poor draft history, ready to defend himself if necessary.
But this time, Savage didn't face a firing squad. After their bye week, the Browns are 3-3 as they visit the winless St. Louis Rams on Sunday. The Browns have gone 64 games without producing back-to-back victories, but thoughts of a playoff berth are creeping into their minds, and optimism rules the locker room.

Stopping tight ends a priority Porous pass defense, better offense contribute to touchdown barrage
By Marla Ridenour Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Oct 26, 2007
BEREA: Regular Browns-watchers might not be surprised that of the team's league-high 17 touchdown passes allowed, seven have gone to tight ends.
Getting beaten by tight ends seems to have been a Browns trait since the franchise returned in 1999.

Cleveland Browns defense struggles to contain passes to tight ends

Friday, October 26, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The win guarantee issued this week by St. Louis Rams tight end Randy McMichael is a bit more relevant when you consider how tight ends have burned the Browns so far this year.
Tight ends have scored seven of the 17 receiving touchdowns yielded by the Browns defense.
By comparison, Browns tight end Kellen Winslow, who's having what everyone considers a good season, has two touchdown catches. Winslow has 29 receptions overall. Opposing tight ends have 30 on the Browns.

Browns Savage sees growth
Friday, October 26, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
Repository sports writer

BEREA Phil Savage has been kinda busy with his own sport.

The Browns general manager kept up with the Indians, but he was in the dark as to what they'd have been up against had they advanced to the World Series.

He admits Todd Helton is the long and short of what he knows of the Rockies. Turn the tables. How many Cleveland Browns could a Denver baseball fan name?

Savage's team, though, shows signs of making a name for itself.

?He guaranteed a win?? Jackson said Wednesday in a conference call with media covering the Browns. ?Well, I back it. I guarantee it with him. We don?t shy away from one another.

?If a guy puts it on the line, we?ve got to go do it.?

GM: Crennel has team on rise

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
BEREA, Ohio -- The last time Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage addressed the media, they were questioning whether his team was in disarray and he was explaining the decision to trade starting quarterback Charlie Frye. Yesterday, with the Browns 3-3 entering a game Sunday against the St. Louis Rams (0-7), Savage told the media he believes the morale and the state of the team are the best they have been in years.
