Cleveland Browns' top 3 draft picks likely to miss pre-training camp

Thursday, July 19, 2007 Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
The Browns' top three draft choices most likely will be missing when the club welcomes its rookies to a pre-training camp orientation on Monday.
General Manager Phil Savage does not expect first-round picks Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn and second- round pick Eric Wright to be signed in time for the three-day rookie orient ation.
Getting any under contract for the first team practice of training camp on July 27 will be problem atic, too.

Just an FYI...not putting too much stock in this yet.

Earlier today, an AM radio host relayed a rumor that a member of the Browns offensive line had tripped the trigger on a steroid test and was going to be suspended four games.

We have heard this same rumor here at the OBR and, in fact, furiously chased the story late last week. We believe that our source is credible, and have been told more than what has been said on AM radio.

At the same time, we do not print this sort of material, particularly when it affects the lives of young men so significantly, unless the information can be independently confirmed. This has not been, so we have not reported anything on this story. Since it can't be confirmed, we would not tell anyone to take the news at face value.

Multiple individuals within the Browns organization have been contacted for their comments and all offered denials of any knowledge regarding any suspensions coming down.

NFL
Browns: five questions heading into camp

One of the questions facing the Browns in preseason is how long it will take to sign rookie quarterback Brady Quinn and throw him into the mix.

On Friday, the Cleveland Browns will be among the first batch of NFL teams to start training camp -- and for good reason. The Browns finished 4-12 in 2006 and have many issues to address.
Change will be the key word in camp. Many starting jobs are up for grabs, several new assistant coaches have been hired and the Browns are installing a new offense.
Although the list could be stretched to a dozen, here are the five most pressing issues facing the Browns:

View from Terry Pluto: It's stink or swim for Browns

With their stadium flooded, Browns open camp amid dire predictions for season

By Terry Pluto

Thinking about the Browns as they suck up all the water at Cleveland Browns Stadium... and it will only take three weeks to get the job done!!!
? Considering some of the national media's views of the Browns, about all they can agree upon is they probably will stink, and I don't mean the stench from the stadium after a water pipe broke sending 50,000 gallons into the stadium -- and then causing toilets not to flush and back up. This is a major, major problem.
? Anyway, ESPN.com uses Scouts Inc. to rate each NFL team by position. They consider the Browns to be No. 29 at quarterback, which might be close, given the unsettled situation at the position. But the first line reads, ``The 2006 Browns gave both Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson a chance to take over this team, and neither responded successfully.''

Browns in 2007: Coming alive or dead last?

Ranked 32nd out of 32 teams by Sports Illustrated, Browns have lot to prove after excitement over draft

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

It has come to this as the Browns prepare to start training camp for the 2007 season:
A draft day that provided excitement and optimism leads to the Browns being ranked 32nd in the league by Sports Illustrated's esteemed football writer, Peter King.
That's 32nd out of 32 teams.
Dead last.
``We got nowhere to go but up,'' Browns General Manager Phil Savage deadpanned last week.

Patrick McManamon on the Browns: Rookies might miss `pre-camp'

By Patrick McManamon

Four days of rookie training camp for the Browns start Monday in Berea.
For the team's top three picks, these four days, when rookies and select veterans are able to begin camp, are important, especially this year.
Barring a last-minute change, the team's top two rookies seem destined to miss part or all of the early camp.
Offensive tackle Joe Thomas, the third overall pick, and quarterback Brady Quinn, the 22nd overall selection, are unsigned.
Four days of valuable acclimation and learning time will be lost. General Manager Phil Savage even said the early time might be more important for Thomas because he has yet to practice in pads.
``It gives them a head start and a chance to get acclimated,'' Savage said of ``pre-camp.'' ``But it's also good in part for Joe because of the contact and for Brady because the other quarterbacks can be here.''

``We got nowhere to go but up,'' Browns General Manager Phil Savage deadpanned last week.
Savage wasn't aware of the ranking when he was told about it, and he pointed out that teams like the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints and New York Jets probably were not ranked high at the beginning of last season, either.
But the ranking epitomizes the mountain of negativity and perception the Browns must climb, starting Friday, when the full team takes the field for the first of 29 training-camp practices.

Absence at camp could hurt

Thomas, Quinn, Wright are not expected today

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

The early part of Browns training camp starts today with little chance that the team's top three draft picks will be on the field.
Joe Thomas, Brady Quinn and Eric Wright are expected to be absent when rookies and selected veterans start practice.
The four-day ``pre-camp'' is not open to the public, but is important to rookies, and General Manager Phil Savage wishes all were in camp.
``Monday (was) what we were shooting for,'' Savage said last week.
The Browns remain far apart with Thomas (the third overall pick) and Quinn (22nd). Word had the Dolphins talking about giving Ohio State receiver Ted Ginn Jr. $16 million in guaranteed money at the ninth pick, which could set Thomas up to make more than $20 million.

No. 3 pick should get No. 3 pay

By Terry Pluto

Joe Thomas was the No. 3 pick in the draft, so the Browns should pay him like the No. 3 pick.
That might sound obvious, but the NFL can be twisted at this time of year, when other teams pressure you to pay your draft picks less while refusing to be frugal with their picks.
Thomas is a left tackle, and left tackles are not supposed to be drafted that high. Or if they are, then you shouldn't pay them as much as, say, a quarterback or receiver.
That's because those are ``skill'' positions.
A left tackle, well, he just blocks, as if that takes about as much skill as, say, dragging your garbage can to the curb.
This is not to suggest the Browns believe that, but it's the prevailing NFL attitude. All teams preach the gospel of blocking, but very few pay like it. So they play hardball with linemen, and genuflect at the altar of the quarterback.

Pressure on Quinn to rise

Holdout could keep him out all season, then lead to trade in 2008

By Patrick McManamon

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn throws a pass at football mini-camp, Friday, May 4, 2007, in Berea, Ohio.
While Browns rookies practice in Berea this week, quarterback Brady Quinn sits and waits.
Quinn's holdout is only a couple of days long, but it has drawn notice around the league. And if one league insider had his way, Quinn would wait a long, long time if his contract demands are way out of line with the spot in which he was drafted.
Quinn ``doesn't have much (leverage) right now,'' said the insider, who has been involved in contract deals with several big-name players over the years. ``If the Browns are smart, they wouldn't do anything extra special.
``They could always just play the other two quarterbacks, let Quinn go back in the draft, or trade him next year.''
The last thing the Browns want is for Quinn to miss the season because he doesn't sign, but his short holdout has all the appearances of developing into a long one.

Baxter takes steps toward comeback

Injured cornerback will practice with Browns

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

The Browns will give Kellen Winslow a little more time to recover from microfracture surgery on his knee, and cornerback Gary Baxter could follow through on his promise to ``be part of history.''
Baxter will start training camp, which begins Friday, on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, but he is scheduled to come off PUP and start practicing Monday.
That would be an amazing step in Baxter's attempt to return from torn patellar tendons in both knees.
Winslow will start camp on PUP, but there seems to be little concern about his ability to play this season. The Browns do not want Winslow to wear himself out early in camp, so he will at most spend the first week of camp on PUP before joining practice.

SPORTS SPOTLIGHT: Browns have upper hand in talks with Quinn
Thursday, July 26, 2007
SPORTS SPOTLIGHT
TODD PORTER

BEREA Every year, the NFL?s midsummer classic settles over training camps. Epic contract disputes and negotiations drag on through two-a-days, because in the 12 weeks since the NFL Draft, agents and general managers just were too busy to deal with this.

The Browns open camp Friday, and, right now, look to do so without their top three picks. Hey, who?s kidding whom here? Like Cleveland needs talented players in camp on time.

It could be worse. PETA picketers could swarm Berea, and the NFL could ban Cleveland?s starting quarterback from training camp.

The problem is the Browns don?t have a starting quarterback.

It won?t be, nor was it ever going to be, rookie Brady Quinn. Let?s get something straight: What General Manager Phil Savage pulled off on draft day ? getting Quinn and Joe Thomas in the first round ? will be a pivotal moment in franchise history.

BROWNS
Cleveland Browns' Kellen Winslow Jr., LeCharles Bentley, Gary Baxter will be put on active/PUP list.

Thursday, July 26, 2007 Tony Grossi

Plain Dealer Reporter
Tight end Kellen Winslow Jr., cornerback Gary Baxter and center LeCharles Bentley will be designated on the active / physically unable to perform list at the start of Browns training camp Friday.
But the club believes Win slow and Baxter will be acti vated upon passing physi cal exams over the next week. Bentley's status remains to be clarified. Players put on active / PUP are those who arrive at camp less than 100 percent healthy. The designation protects the club in the event the player begins the regular season still nursing the same injury.
Winslow had microfracture surgery to promote new cartilage growth and alleviate pain in the right knee he injured in a motorcycle accident in May 2005. The Browns intend to exercise caution in not overusing Winslow early in camp. Baxter is recovering from torn patella tendons in both knees. His recovery has Baxter and the club excited about his prospects of returning to the lineup at some point this season.
