Edwards to give $1 million in scholarships to Cleveland schools

5/14/2007, 10:35 p.m. EDT
The Associated Press
CLEVELAND (AP) ? Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards has pledged $1 million in college scholarships for eighth grade students in Cleveland who keep at least a 2.5 grade point average through high school, the team announced Monday.
Edwards' foundation is choosing 100 students from the city's 58,000-student district for the program, which will include mentoring and tutoring. The students will also volunteer for 15 hours of community service each year and will not be allowed unexcused absences, the Browns said in a statement.

Browns' Edwards needs to tone down the analysis

By Sean McClelland
Staff Writer

Wednesday, May 16, 2007
There's plenty to like about Cleveland Browns receiver Braylon Edwards. He'll beat you deep. He'll catch it over the middle. He'll even block.
And Tuesday, bless his heart, Edwards pledged $1 million in scholarship money for Cleveland school kids who otherwise might not have a shot at college.

Browns' Edwards gives kids incentive

100 8th-graders to get $10,000 for college, if they meet standards

By Patrick McManamon

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - ``Receiving Means Giving'' is the slogan Braylon Edwards chose for his charitable foundation.
Wednesday, the Browns' wide receiver gave to 100 students in the Cleveland school district.
A lot.
Edwards pledged $1 million to the ``Advance 100,'' a specially chosen group of eighth-grade Clevelanders who will receive $10,000 college scholarships if they meet certain requirements in high school. Those requirements include having no unexcused absences and a 2.5 grade-point average. All also must perform at least 15 hours of community service each year.
``This is your chance to no longer say, `Nobody believes in me,' '' Edwards said in a heartfelt and inspiring talk to the 100 at a ceremony at Lincoln West High School on Cleveland's West Side.

Pitching and catching with Chudzinski

Wednesday, May 16, 2007Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter
New Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski hasn't had a day off since he was hired on Jan. 20. And he won't enjoy one for another month.
Chudzinski is busy installing a new offense that, he hopes, will resemble the explosive one he left behind with the San Diego Chargers.
It's the fifth offensive system the Browns have used since 1999.

Braylon Edwards receives, now gives

Thursday, May 17, 2007Joseph L. Wagner
Plain Dealer Reporter
Eighth-grader Michael Bell had a hard time believing the good news when he learned he was eligible for a $10,000 scholarship from Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards.
"He's a life-saver. He gave me the opportunity to be something in life," said Michael, a student at Joseph Landis Elementary School.
Michael was among nearly 100 eighth-graders from Cleveland public schools who took an oath Wednesday at Lincoln West High School. They pledged to keep at least a 2.5 grade-point average and have no unexcused absences throughout high school, and to do at least 15 hours of community service each year.

Studious Browns hope to upgrade defense
Thursday, May 17, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

As they attack spring practice, the Browns aim to parlay a free agency-draft spending spree into an offense with actual oomph.

Last year's team generated 264.6 yards a game, second-worst in the NFL.

Far fewer dollars were earmarked for a defense that gave up 344.8 yards a game, worse than all but five teams.

Given that, what makes Head Coach Romeo Crennel think he can develop a more dynamic "D"? The third-year head coach cited "offseason study" during a stop in Canton.

Do Browns see light at end of tunnel?

UNIONTOWN Those eager eyes peeking over the edge of the crater belong to Phil Savage.

"We've been digging out of a hole for two years," the Browns general manager said Wednesday at the Northeast Ohio Celebrity Luncheon Club. "I really believe we're right on the edge of crawling out of that hole once and for all."

The Browns are 19-45 since making the playoffs in 2002, 10-22 since Savage and Romeo Crennel took over.
