Cleveland Browns (2007 & prior)

Which QB is answer?
Browns must determine where future lies: Frye, Anderson or elsewhere
Friday, December 22, 2006

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

There is an old saying that a coach who thinks he has two starting quarterbacks on his roster usually has zero.
The Cleveland Browns and coach Romeo Crennel might be heading toward that quandary with Derek Anderson and Charlie Frye. Both young quarterbacks have been given an opportunity to play this season and have raised questions about the team?s future. Anderson will start Sunday and likely in the season finale the following week because he?s healthy and playing well. Crennel, in an effort to avoid controversy, said he just wants to finish the season strong and has confidence in both.

Baxter vows return

After tearing the patellar tendons in both knees, he can barely walk but is determined to play next year

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - Gary Baxter vows to defy the odds and rewrite medical history, but there might not be any odds for what the Browns' cornerback plans to do.
``I'm playing this upcoming season,'' Baxter said. ``I've got to walk out there on the field on Sept. 9.''
Standing at a microphone with the support of a walker, Baxter spoke for the first time Friday since tearing the patellar tendons in both knees Oct. 22 against the Denver Broncos. He was released from the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday and returned to team headquarters the next day.

Browns notebook

Frye's wrist injury disputed

Crennel insists it's only a bruise, rails at media for saying it is fractured and he's out for season

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - Browns coach Romeo Crennel heatedly denied reports in the Akron Beacon Journal, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and ESPN.com that quarterback Charlie Frye has a fractured bone in his right hand.
Crennel was more animated Friday -- at least publicly -- than he has been during his two years with the Browns. He questioned whether the source close to Frye cited in the reports was a doctor and seemed angry that the media didn't trust him. He continued to insist that Frye has a bone bruise in his throwing hand that will keep him out for the third consecutive game Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
``If that unnamed source is the doctor, tell him to call me. If the source is not a doctor, tell him he should keep his mouth shut,'' Crennel said.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio ? Browns coach Romeo Crennel vehemently denied local and national media reports citing anonymous sources that quarterback Charlie Frye has a broken bone in his right wrist.
The team has called the injury a deep bone bruise and is sticking to its guns. "It seems like some of you guys have been talking to the doctors and all of a sudden the guy has a fracture," Crennel said. "He has a bone bruise. I said that yesterday, I said it the day before, I said it a couple of weeks ago and I?ll say it tomorrow if you ask me tomorrow. ?

Ho, ho, woe this time for Browns

Team has worse record than before last Christmas Eve's game, and many question marks remain

By Patrick McManamon

One year ago, the Browns played a game on Christmas Eve that came to define the 2005 season.
That game was the Christmas Eve massacre, when the Pittsburgh Steelers came in and thumped the Browns 41-0.
Before that game, though, things seemed to be kind of on the up and up.
The Browns had a 1,000-yard running back.
The team had entrusted the offense to quarterback Charlie Frye.
A Brink's truck of salary-cap money awaited.
Things seemed to be headed in a positive direction.

DEFENSE PLAGUES BROWNS, TOO

By Terry Pluto

Scribbles in my Christmas notebook...
? For all the talk about the sad shape of the Browns' offensive line -- and yes, it's terrible -- the defensive line is in the same condition. Here's a shocking statistic: In eight of 14 games this season, the Browns have had a guy run for at least 100 yards against them.
? The Browns ranked 30th out of 32 teams defending the run. They have allowed 16 runs of at least 20 yards -- that ranks 31st. They are giving up 145 yards per game on the ground. The starting defensive line was Orpheus Roye, Ted Washington and Alvin McKinley. Roye had just an average year before going down with knee surgery. He was hurt when playing. Washington is huge but old. McKinley is below average. In a 3-4 defense, the linebackers are supposed to stuff the run. Inside backers Andra Davis and D'Qwell Jackson make lots of tackles, but each have only three for losses.

Feel their pain: Injuries hurt Browns? chances
Team also suffered maddening amount of staph infections

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BEREA, Ohio ? All-Pro center LeCharles Bentley started it.
Starting quarterback Charlie Frye ended it.
From the first day of training camp to the end of the year, injuries have been a major part of the Cleveland Browns? season. In a year when Cleveland expected to be much improved, the Browns are 4-10 heading into their home game today against the equally struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-11).

Does it really matter? The frustration I once felt from all the injuries and all the losses has pretty much been replaced by apathy. It's hard to really care about your favorite team when you can't stand many of the key players *cough* Braylon *cough* Winslow. If they were to get the first pick and drafted Quinn, I'd box up my considerable collection of Browns clothing and paraphernalia and stuff it in a closet.
