Clemson Tigers (official thread)

Clemson needs to start filling out the SEC! application now. They so utterly belong there. Take FSU with you, and we'll throw in Nebraska. The Special Education Conference will be complete.

We'll take Vanderbilt to replace Nebraska. They don't fit the SEC anyway, and we'll have the annual Egghead Bowl when they battle Northwestern.

Love it when fans do this shit instead of admitting to themselves that they have positional deficiencies that savior Dabo hasn't focus enough on. But yeah the kid doesn't have balls or whatever. Sure.

They will probably still run the table at least until the ACC title game.

They skip Da U and UNC in the regular season. Though after watching week 1 neither of those teams may even be a threat, even if Clemson has some issues right now theyve got the whole damn season to work on it before they get to that point.

Lets be honest, they're going to run the table in the ACC, even in the title game. Miami and UNC are both suspect

Don't sleep on Hafley - but good lord that schedule is week.

Not sleeping on Hafley and BC, but just don't know if they have enough talent. I know most are going to use last year's game as an example, but I doubt Dabo is sleeping on Hafley this year. And he knows that he can't afford another L in order to make the CFP.
And I also want OSU to see Clemson in the CFP again, I would enjoy to beat them at least 31-0 or more...

"When we don't (win), people are ticked. There's a lot of criticism," Swinney said this week on his call-in show. "There's a lot of disappointment and I wouldn't have it any other way. It comes with the territory. I'm glad we're a relevant program that people like to talk about when we don't meet the expectations.

"But I can promise you this, ain't nobody have expectations like we have in this building. That's for dang sure."

Welcome to what is always one of the most lovely mailbags of the season. It’s the post-Week 1 edition — a.k.a., the “Fire everybody!” edition.

...

Clemson has been a pretty steady No. 2 to Alabama in most people’s minds among “best programs in the country” since the Tigers won their last national championship. But since then, they lost badly in the 2019 CFP final to LSU, lost badly to Ohio State in the 2020 CFP semifinals, and now lost badly (offensively, at least) to Georgia in the first game of the season. Still No. 2? If not them, Ohio State? Nobody? — Josh in Chicago

I’ll wait until the season’s over before drawing any conclusions. I’m old enough to remember the “Alabama’s dynasty is dead” columns after the Tide lost to Ohio State in the 2014 CFP semifinals, then lost to Ole Miss for the second straight year a few games into the next season. All the Tide did from there is win another national title.

But there’s definitely a noticeable crack in Dabo Swinney’s program, one that’s likely been developing for quite some time. Since 2015, Clemson has had an impressive 18 first- or second-round draft picks, but only one, second-rounder Jackson Carman last spring, was an offensive lineman. Only two others have even been drafted. By comparison, Alabama over the same time period has had five first- and second-rounders and five others drafted. It makes you wonder how much having elite quarterbacks in Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, all those great receivers and a four-year matchup nightmare in Travis Etienne masked some very average O-lines.

Because that group has now been completely dominated in its last two games. Even with all-time ACC rushing leader Etienne there in 2020, Clemson quietly slipped from No. 2 to No. 11 in the conference in rushing yards per game (153.8). And it barely even tried to run against Georgia, which allowed the Bulldogs to just tee off on DJ Uiagalelei, especially on third down. We’ve heard great things about five-star freshman Will Shipley, but he was barely a factor Saturday night.

But of course, Clemson is not going to face another defense comparable to Georgia’s the entire rest of the regular season. It’s got a lot of time to figure things out. Uiagalelei will get a lot more experience. Presumably Shipley will become a much bigger part of the offense. But there’s no easy fix for a subpar O-line. If Clemson does get back to the Playoff, it may need a much different game plan than it brought to Charlotte.
