Clark Phillips III (CB Utah Utes)

I think he sticks. He's run out of time.
That's a horrible sentence. We're talking about a person's future. We joke about people like DPJ who are talented but picked a school where they didn't develop for whatever reason. This kid is 17 or 18 and has to make sure he picks a place that can help him get to where he wants to be. The fact that he got thrown a curve ball at the 11th hour shouldn't be a good thing.

Agreed. I do hope he's connected to others beyond Hafley and I'm guessing he is. I also would hope these 17 or 18 year olds are picking a program, place, and a school over any one person. Just be honest with the kid and things should work out in everyone's best interest, hope it's Columbus for this one.

Yep. I would hope the sales pitch is "People freaked out when we lost Combs, and look what happened. We're Ohio State. We're always going to have the best coaches available for you. just don't look at last year's LBs or secondary."

The sales pitch is simple. We are DBU. We are losing our entire defensive backfield to the NFL and you have a chance to be in the 2- deep the second you step on campus.

His skillset is unique. He can cover the slot/inside WR and play outside. He is the best CB in the country. He got beat once at the Opening Final...once.

I think that this is exactly it. Sadly, this time of year is difficult with the coaching carousel and things like this are going to happen when you have quality staff members. I hope that any kid, regardless of program, selects the program for more than the coach who is there today because it’s such a fluid situation.

While not ideal in that there is no deal in place for the next coach, the run of coaches who have worn the S&G should be comforting. Given what we saw Day do with the staff last year, it should be even more comfort that the next coach will be of the same quality as I believe that Day knows that he has less room for a bad hire than his predecessor.

If I were Day, I’d not be afraid to tell a kid, “Look, my future and your future are both tied to the quality of this hire. Neither of us are going to be disappointed.”

The 'early signing period' is just that. Sure, once pen is placed on the offer, it is valid and binding on both parties. However, if one chooses NOT to sigh on Dec 17th (?), then they have until Feb 7 (?) to sign their letter of intent. NOT signing now would be a bad sign for the Buckeyes, but does give tOSU time to sign a top flight DB coach. Go Bucks! The kid is worried, sure, but you gotta know that tOSU will harvest a top flight DB coach from somewhere. I like the idea of someone with pro DB coaching experience, (from a good pro team natch), and then they can teach tOSU DBs the pro sets. Go Bucks. PS, maybe having Coombs come back isn't such a bad idea. Don't follow it, but his rah-rah style might not sit too well with these older, very well paid pros.

Brenden White leaving has to make the playing time sell much easier.
I don't see the correlation between a S/LB hybrid and a CB

Actually from what I've read, the players love Coombs and hes a big reason for their defensive turn around
