Cincinnati Reds 2023 (sell the team Bob)

Asscraft just needed to pick the ball up, get his feet set and throw a little bit outside to first to get that 3rd out of the 8th. Every night lately it's a different kind of bizarre fuckery that causes a fatal meltdown. 3rd strike wild pitch puts a runner on - okay so get the next guy out and walk to the dugout. Nope, it's chaos and magical comebacks are few and far between at this point. The bats have gone silent.

Watching this shit is torture and I don't see the point in continuing to allow the abuse. The point is to enjoy the weekend. I'll just check the score for the next few days.

I saw a pitcher who was losing his mechanics in the 7th, caused him to lose his control somewhat but he battled through it and gave a big fist pump when he got the last guy to K. That's all the necessary pitching body language to know your pitcher is done for the day. Physically and mentally.

I was going nuts when he sent him back out there for the 8th. I couldn't believe it. Then once he walked a guy, had two outs and the tying run coming to the plate, NOT to call on your all star closer (who had two days rest) for a 4 out save is beyond comprehension. Then to double/triple down on that and leave the closer in for the 9th and 10th, burning him for today, makes me ask what the fuck did I just see? That had to be on purpose. It's inexplicable.

Agreed, there was definitely something out of kilter with that decision making. They say Reds management relies on analytics for in-game moves. Of course analytics don't consider the uncalculatable factors you speak of. Maybe the data indicated <90 pitches 8th inning Ashcraft was safer than Sims/Gibaut. If Bell can't use his head and veto the analytics, I have always thought that's a problem.

Btw, he didn't walk that guy with 2 outs in the 8th - that was the dribbler I was speaking of that Ashcraft only needed to execute a good throw to first to get out #3. But you're right - I think most managers would have had their closer ready to come in and shut it down when the tying run came to bat.

Bringing him back out in the 8th technically worked, actually, because Ashcraft induced very weak contact for what should have been the 3rd out. Stephenson probably should have taken over and fielded it and thrown it to first.

Yeah I mistyped/brain locked. I meant the knubber.

I can live with the analytical call to put him back out for the 8th but I don't believe the algorithm is going to tell you to leave a SP in to face the other teams legit threat as the tying run after 7 2/3 when you have your rested, elite closer down in the pen.

He also seemed to use his LH bats off the bench like he thought he had Fraley but then didn't. Now we find out he is on the IL.

Whatever. It was a curious to flat out horribly bad night for Bell but that shit is going to happen over a season.

In the off season they do need to address the defense. We need a better mix of hitters and gloves. Stephenson in particular. I think run prevention will get better in '24 with health and continued development of the pitchers but the defensive shortcomings need addressed.

Votto, India, Stephenson are all bad defensive players. Hard to tell on Steer with how much they move him around. Elly at SS and McClain at 2B is clearly the best defensive combo at the keystone.

I fucking hate the guy. I believe I've made that known already but this team has far too much promise to have it in his damn hands. I want the Reds to be back but I wont be able to control myself if I have to watch him fuck everything up for the next 3 years.

On the defensive topic and because I need some good Reds vibes post ASB...

Reading more and more that Arroyo is developing as a hitter. He has always been said to be the far and away best pure SS in the organization. If that came to fruition you could maybe see a scenario like this:

SS Arroyo
2b Matt the Bat
3B Marte
1B CES
LF Steer
CF EDLC
RF ??

Or you put Elly at 3B, Arroyo at SS and MM at 2B then turn Marte/Steer into your DH/LF duo. Who knows but some good stuff to ponder.
