Cincinnati Reds 2021 (because we have to, I guess)

Big market team or small market team, the constraint is always the ability to identify, draft and develop your own talent. The economics of the game/CBA make it this way beyond any reasonable doubt.

Young productive players cost next to nothing and you can control them for a, relatively, long time. Old expensive vets are luxury items, you use here and there. They can't be the basic platform of your roster management strategy.

So instead of crying poor, take the responsibility and recognize that you as a franchise have, for decades, absolutely sucked at identifying, drafting and developing your own talent. If you do have some mad money, don't piss it away on LTC's for the occasional Votto you do produce. Go spend it on scouting, analytics and or player development. Reinvest and try to find more than one Votto every 20 years.

And for any of you thinking that the Reds aren't that bad at scouting and developing talent, I present you with this article that shows that statistically, the Reds are literally the worst at it and it's not even close.

Lowest total WAR when adding all draftees from 2011-2020: 17.7 for the Reds. The whiny bitches are in first at 99.

Worst "best" WAR season of any draftee -- best WAR any Reds draftee has had over the last decade is 1.6

If you actually tried to draft with lowest career WAR as the goal, you couldn't do that poorly. You'd fuck it up and draft a winner.

The fact they have actually been trying to draft players they think will do well, is mind blowing.

If any of us were that bad at our given occupations, we'd fucking starve to death.

Well, there's a reason when the Indians trade with the Reds, its not the Reds guys they take back.

That said, you're right, you'd fuck up and get a guy who could give you... 10-12 WAR over 10 years? Maybe?

Like the Bengals drafting Anthony Munoz.

Sooner or later, no matter how bad you are, consistently drafting from a high position is going to result in the aberrant HOFer.
