Guess we have to report for spring training

giphy.gif

I'm ready

Looks like they will comfortably finish with worst record (7-19 or so) and worse run diff (-46) in the cactus League for 2021.

Not that spring training means anything but for perspective on that -46 run diff, the next worst in Cactus play was -29. The worst over in Grapefruit was -34.

This team is going to suck balls even by this team's standards.

Relegation.

I guess that's a thing in European soccer. If you suck, you end up being relegated to, I guess what constitutes the minors, and the best team from the minors moves up to take your spot. I don't know if any of this is true, but Cinci should get swapped out if they're going to suck balls every year.

The problem is in the US the majors own the minors so relegation isn't an option. I guess I'll learn more about relegation in
Ted Lasso season 2
. The American sport that could handle relegation would be college football if you had four 16 team conferences and you replace the team that finishes last in each conference every season with the FCS team from the region that finishes first.

I can't blame MLB owners from small markets for not spending money when the income disparity is so high between big and small market teams. It is their fault for not instituting an NFL or NBA style salary cap. The NFL has the most parity because they have a concrete cap where every team makes enough money to pay it out every season. It is more of a game of smart contracts and finding diamonds in the rough that they can draft low and get under contract for 4-5 years for cheap. The NBA soft cap is a little worse for parity, but if a team like the Cavs can have the highest salary/tax for a season or two and still break even the system seems to work. With the soft cap big market teams still have more ability to go over the cap, but a team over the cap can't go out and sign a big money FA and pays a shit ton of tax. In the MLB the average team salary is 73M and there are teams that pay double that. If you play in a small market and can't play moneyball you are going to suck forever.
