Cincinnati Bengals (Same Ole Bengals)

I am NOT comfortable with the idea of starting the season with a journeyman at one Guard position and a rookie at the other.
Joe found a way to make it work because he is Joe. But that really cannot be the standard moving forward on pass blocking. I maintain that Donovan Jackson is the perfect first round pick and that is not OSU bias. Well rounded and versatile, veteran with the build and intellect to start immediately. We could probably trade back a little bit to get him, and add value with what should be a mostly defensive draft. Even if we don't trade back, the pick makes a lot of sense in our current state.

We could also go Edge, but this class is deep and I think we could wait until the 2nd round for that pick.

I just don’t know how people can choose to home and then remain Bengals fans. Even living in Cincinnati I ask that to Bengals fans all of the time. Your owner has shown no real desire to want to win. And now it’s a 2nd straight generation of the part of the family who wants to be terrible at signing their players, and doing just enough to keep butts in seats until they inevitably just let more of their best talent leave again.

Although my first allegiance is to the woeful Falcons - I am actually fascinated by stadium costs, renovations, negotiations and civic competency.
I'm actually siding with the Bengals on this one and for all their ineptitude and cheapness as it relates to scouts, coaching staff, player contracts, drafting, trades....etc - Blackburn and Co. have a very reasonable request. Hamilton County simply continues to screw things up beyond measure.

Example:
ln the original lease agreed to in 1996 - the city would reimburse the game day operating expenses of the Bengals. Per Google, an NFL team takes on about 2.5-4mm/home game in operating expenses. So over the course of a season, including pre-season and playoff games, Hamilton County is on the hook for about 30mm bucks paid directly to the Bengals. This covers utilities, staffing, security, maintenance and repairs, cleaning...etc
It's significant for a 67k seat outdoor stadium.

Eventually, Hamilton County realized this was a drain on their liquidity because they did stupid shit like invest in the street car and asked the Bengals to re-negotiate. In good faith in the Covid year of 2020, the Bengals amended the lease and waived all game day expense payments IF the city purchased, cleared and gifted the miserable eyesore that is the Hilltop Concrete plant across the way. This was to be done by 2024. Understandably - there is countless opportunities to use that space for Training facilities, indoor practice fields...etc
Hamilton County agreed and completely defaulted. The concrete plant still sits there to this day and as such Blackburn begin sending the county invoices for Gameday expenses again. Correctly so - imo!
Both sides absolutely loathe each other but the Bengals are correct in that they don't have a great deal of faith in the County to manage this per terms.

This is why, if you look at renderings of what the 1.2 billion dollars will be spent on, the overwhelming majority of it will be on things outside of the stadium.
Indoor practice facility and training/locker room/cafeteria for team and staff. Renovated and cleared and expanded parking for fans throughout Mehring Way and along the riverfront, Concourse upgrades surrounding the stadium...etc

Yes - there are improved video boards and ribbon screens and dumb shit like biergartens and automated markets for concessions, upgrades to the club and overhaul to bathroom facilities - but that's a small portion of what's been requested.

This is by and large - the cheap stuff:

This is where the real expense lies:

Compared to current - it's a world of change

These IMO - should be scrapped. The county should not fund this clown show crap:

And this is atrocious and should be dropped. Presumably this is where the players would walk out of to get to the field where fans can stand at a distance and cheer on the team. Unnecessary public funds expense.
It's directly out of Legends of the Hidden Temple

It is going to be an interesting draft this year. The more I think about it, unless someone obvious jumps out at #17, I wouldn't mind trading back a few picks to gain additional picks. Lets face it, this team needs a lot of new bodies, especially on defense. If we pick any position other than IOL/Edge/DT in the first two rounds, we are out of our minds. With that sentiment, here is my mock draft for the first few rounds now that the FA dust has settled:

1st: IOL Donovan Jackson - I might sound like a homer here, but this pick makes too much sense. We desperately need a new guard and Jackson has the versatility to swing to tackle with injuries, which we typically have a lot of. Plus he is ready to go from Day 1, he is not a project. Would also love to see Mike Green from Marshall or James Pearce at Edge if either is there...the Edge class is deep thankfully, so there could be many other good ones that slide down to this spot. Originally I would have said Tyleik, but we just picked up a really good NT in FA and the position isn't in dire need now. If Warren falls to this spot though, it could be tempting or it could be used as bait to trade back.
2nd: Edge JT or Landon Jackson - It looks like JT or Sawyer could fall down to this spot. I hope not for their sake in terms of draft position, but it would be sweet to land either and we have to get another Edge badly. Sawyer would be the best fit imo. Landon Jackson from Arkansas I like quite a bit.
3rd: CB/S/DT - If either of Ransom or Burke is here (unlikely for Burke), you go there. The Parrish kid from KSU I like a lot as well. At DT, I really liked the Texas DTs and would be happy with either one here or next round if we can get them.

- The one caveat though is the Cincy has interviewed Trey and Judkins...if they somehow fell to the 2nd round, that might be too good to pass up even given the team needs in the trenches/defense.

Very positive first step.

County has agreed to find $185 million in stadium, refurbishments and renovations. This is not the 300 million that the bangles have requested, but it’s a massive step forward.

I believe you will see the Bengals sign and amended agreement for the full 20 years but for 12 to 13 as a positive step forward for both parties

It's what they call a "traits" pick. Measurables over production.

In other words, a typical Bengals pick...
Yeah it gets a C- grade from me and that's only because it was the right position to go with and Stewart does have upside. I said above that this is not the year to get a high upside, low production guy at that position and of course that's exactly what they did, all the while Mike Green was sitting there for the taking. They better get Hendrickson taken care of, Stewart is not going to be ready this season to be a major contributor.

Seems like Shemar just needs a little coaching.
In the post draft interview, he said something about running straight where the coaches send him. Well, maybe he needs to put a little bend to his straight line path and he can get to the QB.

Knight in the 2nd I love (LB from South Carolina). Explosive, smart and mature, violent and a great pass rusher. People are talking about his age (25) like it's a bad thing but we needed instant help to our front 7. This pick fits that bill.

Followed up with a really good pick in the 3rd with Fairchild (OG from Georgia), excellent value at a position of need. Guy gave up ZERO sacks over two seasons against the highest level of competition possible. There's a possibility Ransom could be there next round and we better pull the trigger if he is, we need safety help. Last picks should consist of some combination of S/CB/DT/OT/RB. I'll give them credit, they are consciously addressing positions of need.
