Cincinnati Bengals (Same Ole Bengals)

Bill Lazor is a huge reason why the Bengals are taking an L in week 3. Eifert was shredding the middle of Carolina’s defense, and completely abandoned it. Kuechly went to the locker room, and only threw it to TEs once. Got a drive into Carolina territory, and a holding pushed it back to 2nd and 20, what do they do? Run a drag route? WTF? Two consecutive drives with ultra conservative playcalling, then on the last drive, with the ball inside the 10, he decides to go gun’s blazing?

Fucking yikes.

Dalton turned the ball over three times, one was a tipped pass into the air, and one of those was on an absolutely garbage playcall. Despite the first two turnovers, the Bengals had a reasonable shot to win this game. The playcalling blew that opportunity.

Not really all that disappointed in the loss. Would have been nice to have that one, but Carolina is tough and we were missing about half our team by the end of the game it felt like. The huge weakness in my eyes was the LB play...having Burfict and Brown back is going to be huge. But overall I didn't see anything that gives me a ton of concern at this point in the year. Gotta get our guys healthy and on to the next one.

Wow. That was just fucked. I genuinely feel bad because Eifert seems like a decent dude. To echo Fungo's thoughts - probably best he just walk away from the game now.

Much easier said than done but the last few years have been brutal for him.

Eifert should just walk away from this sport while (if) he still can. That was really ugly.

I was saying the same thing earlier this morning. Feel awful for him, he just gets the worst injuries. But he needs to hang it up for his own good, poor guy can't catch a break.

What a drive!

Boyd is becoming a star.

Excellent poise from Dalton on that drive.

3-1

Dude, huge drive and win. Thought for sure that was going to be a loss. I don't want to get too excited because we've all been down this road before, but this team is very improved. Glad to be 3-1.

I know the defense hasn’t exactly been great, but the offense has been a HUGE upgrade now that Tyler Boyd is becoming a nice compliment to AJ Green. Losing Eifert certainly hurts, but I’m not sure it will be too costly in the long run. Kroft and Uzomah are both reliable enough. Just going to need Green, Boyd, and Ross to lead the way in the passing game. Mixon is still likely a week or two away minimum, but Bernard and Walton have both been more than serviceable. The offensive line was a bit of a concern today, but they’ve made some huge improvements since last season. Just need to continue to gel and improve. Need to at least split the next two games to feel really good about things. I’m still cautiously optimistic.

I am with you 100%, Boyd has been the most critical component of the offensive resurgence. The lack of a quality WR2 since Jones went to Detroit has been glaringly obvious and I am glad that Boyd has seized the opportunity and ran with it. He has been playing at a very high level and Ross kicking in definitely helps as well. I think Eifert being out will be a detriment at some point, but Kroft and Uzomah have both looked pretty good in their own right. To be perfectly honest, I am surprised Eifert even had 3 healthy weeks...love the guy and he gives it his all, but he just never has been able to stay healthy and there is just no way we could bank on having him all season. No way we built a lot of our scheme around him being available all year.

Also agreed on the RB situation, Gio is a stud and Walton looked really impressive to me...no need to rush Mixon imo, we need him for the long haul. Hopefully he can be back by Week 6 for the Steelers but if not, then by Week 7 for the Chiefs. Cautiously optimistic as well.

Going into their final two games last season, the Bengals had 5 wins. The Bengals have 4 wins in their first 5 this season.

What an exciting 2nd half, that was a really fun one to watch, especially with Hubbard getting the final TD on the INT return. Good mix of young talent and veterans. Really need to pull of the next game at home against Shittsburgh...not only would 5-1 be huge in the grand scheme of things, but it would also bridge the gap nicely in the AFC North. In any event, way better start than I think anyone in here could have envisioned.

I felt like the Bengals would improve their record from last season (7-9), just not sure I expected a 4-1 start. My guess was 9-7 or 10-6. I believe Hobson had either 10-6 or 11-5, can’t remember. The Bengals just did a stellar job addressing needs in the offseason, killed it in the draft, and made some real nice upgrades with position coaches/DC. Hopefully Burfict can keep out of trouble (longshot), and I really like what this defense is capable of. I like Vigil, Evans, and Nickerson, but it’s still pretty clear that they aren’t quite ready yet. Vigil is obviously the farthest LB along not named Brown and Burfict, but he struggled without Brown helping him out in weeks 2-4. I’m also really glad that they liked what they saw in Bates, as I didn’t see him being this big of a difference maker this early.

Got to keep this up, but off to an incredible start!

Definitely agreed, I thought we likely would improve to about a .500 team (plenty of time to still end up there obviously). And the upgrade in athleticism at LB is definitely there...definitely need some experience, but having Brown and Burfict out there now helps, we just HAVE to stay healthy there because that's killed is in the past. And I'm also blown away by how well Bates has played, his play has made and enormous difference. Definitely good scouting there because I didn't see that coming. And obviously Hubbard making plays has been big, also didn't expect this much from him right away.

On the offensive side of the ball, the emergence of Boyd has been the biggest development to me, he is really helping the offense. The OL is still shaky at moments but looks a little improved, hoping they keep coming along. Price needs to get healthy. And Mixon looks flat out dynamic out there, just needs to remain healthy, particularly with Bernard out for a couple more weeks it looks like.

Anyways, agreed that it's a nice start and there have been upgrades across several key areas that encourage me and make me think the 4-1 start is not a fluke. Big one this week, really hoping we can get one more here. 5-1 and giving the Steelers another loss in the division would be enormous. But then again, they know that and are always a thorn in our side, so it'll be a tough one.
