But really we need to improve depth at LB and on the DL...the injuries there proved to be a HUGE dropoff behind our starters. We can wait until later on in the draft to pick up a WR.

I think we have to go either DT or DE... I just don't think LB is that important a position in today's NFL to merit a 1st round pick on it (see Raiders, Panthers defensive utility despite top NFL LBs, and SFs to lose Willis/Bowman and still be good defensively). I'm terrified that Burfict will never play football again, but even with that, unless there's just no remotely 1st round worth DL available at our pick I think you have to go DE or DT.

My ideal offseason is we add a middle+ starting-caliber FA DE from a really deep group, eliminating the need to draft a DE this year, then draft like this:

1st: DT - Getting a stud DT to pair with a rejuvenated Geno will make this D really tough to run or pass on.
2nd/3rd: QB/LT - For these two rounds, I think we get prospects for next year basically. Get a high-ceiling QB who can sit behind Andy and learn for a year and then if Andy is bad next year (a given) cut him, and a high-ceiling LT to groom behind Whit for a season and then we can move Whit inside and he can take over at LT (and if we need him at guard this season, that's fine, but don't think we throw a rookie LT into the fire). Order determined just by who you like in each round
4th: LB - we do need depth here, especially given Vontaze's microfracture surgery since he likely got Kremchek'd
5th: WR - we need depth here but I don't see it as a huge need if we're 2/3 healthy between Green, Sanu, Jones

With the remaining picks, get another young DE to groom (since Hunt/Clarke can barely get on the field despite how bad ours are right now), another DT for depth since we're hopefully cutting Peko and Geathers this offseason, a C to push Bodine after a mediocre rookie year, a TE prospect to play behind Eifert, and you can never have too many late round corners.

Of course, none of this will happen and we'll draft RB/CB first two rounds.

I think DL is the inevitable 1st round pick and it needs to be...Peko and Geathers are old. In particular, I hope there is a good DT there...I think Thompson and Still are good depth guys but not starters. But depending on who is available in the 2nd/3rd, I would like to see us go OT and LB. I think by the end of the 3rd, most of the top LBs are gone. We got lucky on getting Burfict undrafted but he would have been gone in the 1st or 2nd without character issues. If there is a good tackle left in the 2nd, hopefully we go there and look at LB in the 3rd. I think if we go DL, OT, and LB, we will not have to reach in the first 3 rounds. Past then, a vertical WR threat and more DL/OL help is in order, plus a backup TE to supplant Gresham.

What do we think of Michael Bennett at #24? The combine will be a big deal for him but I think he has the talent to justify picking him there regardless...think he would be a great 3-tech to compliment Thompson/Geno as a 1-tech. Disruptive and a pass rusher that we desperately need inside. Plus I think he is an instant impact guy. Depends on who is available but I really would love that pick. I also would not mind Devin Smith in the 3rd...I know everyone is calling him high 1st-early 2 but he will not run a great 40 imo. He is very, very fast but football fast. Seeing as he is a projected deep threat, that will not bode well for going that early. If Marvin Jones stays healthy, then we have our deep threat but an insurance policy would be nice. And obviously I hope Devin goes high but if he slips that far, I want him. We traditionally do not take many Buckeyes but I want to see that change.

But I think inevitably we need to make a big free agency pickup at LB, OT, DL, or WR. Maybe at two of those spots. I'm not really comfortable picking up all of those needs in the draft alone. I think we can draft later on DL and WR, but I would like to look around hard on LB in the free agency in particular.

Current reports have us signing Greg Hardy in FA, which I would be HUGE fan of that move. His off-field incidents will drive his price down but he was elite the last 2 years prior to that. If that's the case, I think it gives us the flexibility to go BPA if there is anyone who blows our socks off, otherwise we can draft a DT. This year's DT class isn't super strong with people who will still be around in mid-20s [probably looking at Malcolm Brown, Eddie Goldman, Arik Armstead, I like Brown but not a huge fan of the others]. But, there's decent DT depth in the 2nd, so could see us going BPA and then DT in the 2nd. Still think that's definitely the biggest position of need. There looks to be decent LB talent that could still be available where we're drafting [Kendricks, Dawson, Thompson, Beasley] so could see us going LB then DT. Regardless, Hardy allows us so much flexibility and I love the idea.

I would also love to get Hardy for the exact reasons you listed. I think that allows us to go DT/LB (preferably in that order but just take the best of whoever is there at those positions). LB free agency may get interesting as well...some talk about us looking at Hawk, which I would love. Burfict is the star, Mauluga looked better last season, and Lamur is a young talent. But Hawk is a proven veteran that would be a perfect fit in this unit imo. Either way, I hope we can get someone of that quality at either DE, DT, or LB...if we do, then I think we can address our needs early. I am assuming we are cutting ties with Gresham and would like to slide Whitworth back down to guard in the next year or so, so in some order I think we go DT/LB/OT/TE in the first 4 rounds.

Already visited with Hawk and Anthony Fasano, who I would love to see us bring in at TE to compliment Eifert. Also some scuttlebutt about looking to bring Michael Johnson back if the Bucs cut him...I also would like that.

Adding Fairley in addition to Hawk would clear up the draft picture quite a bit. Adding a DT and LB would allow us to go DE and OT in the first two rounds...or a WR if the right deep threat is there. Oh, and actually make us a contender again.

I kind of hope Dorial Green-Beckham gets drafted by the Bengals. Having a 6'5"+ receiver play on the other side of Green would be lethal (assuming Gingersnaps can GET the ball to them :lol:)
