Cincinnati Bengals (Just Burrow In)

Bengals Bros - if I am reading the tea leaves correctly, Chase Brown comes in and immediately takes on the role that Semaj Perine held last year, correct?
That would be my presumption. Mixon is going to have to take a pay cut to stay in Cincy though, so Brown could be fighting for a starting spot if Mixon is gone. I think Mixon takes a little humble pie and stays, but just throwing it out there that Brown could end up in a pretty significant role.

To follow up on this, it looks like Mixon should be back. So depth chart looks like Mixon, Brown, Evans, Tre Williams. Not too shabby, Brown is going to get a lot of PT it looks like.

I also have a feeling they’re going to let Mixon play this next season with his inflated cap number. If he proves his worth, he probably plays out his current contract without a restructure. If he doesn’t, they either cut him or restructure to get his cap hit under $7m. I think he can have a monster year with this OL, as long as he stays healthy and everyone on the OL comes back and stays healthy. Orlando and La’el’s best qualities are their run blocking, so it’ll be interesting to see how he performs behind the best OL he’s had in his Bengal’s career.

So do we know what he restructured to? We had to sign him given the Perine departure.

Here is what is being reported:

Contract Details: Joe Mixon Takes Multi-Year Pay Cut After Restructuring Deal With Bengals

Bengals running back Joe Mixon restructured his contract on Friday, which will keep him in Cincinnati for the 2023 season and potentially beyond.

Mixon took a $4.39 million pay cut this year according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. That means he'll make roughly $5.51 million in base salary in 2023. He can make another $2 million in incentives this season.

Cincinnati clears $4.39 million in cap space, which could help them in their quest to sign Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins or other key pieces to long-term extensions.

The Bengals also restructured Mixon's contract for the 2024 campaign according to Rapoport. He took a $4.67 million pay cut, which makes it realistic for the soon to be 27-year-old to stay in Cincinnati for the foreseeable future.

Also, Mixon still has 1st degree misdemeanor of "aggravated menacing charge" (i.e. road rage incident back in January) pending:

How do these restructured contracts work?
Is it as simple as a player agrees to take less guaranteed money this year in exchange for having it paid out for a longer period of time?
I agree. I often wonder how this all works. Because it reads like he is agreeing to take mess money then he originally signed for.
Kind of like your boss saying I know we said we would pay you 60K this year and next but I want to hire this other guy so you need to resign a contract paying you 50K......how does that even make sense. You have a 2 year contract at 60K so why would you take any less money.

His base salary for 2023 and 2024 was not guaranteed. The alternative to re-negotiating was probably being released.
Exactly. And Mixon knows he probably won't command more than what he restructured for anywhere else, RBs around his age have an all-time low value in the league right now. And he has the recent legal issues and injury history. Plus he has incentives that could put him back up around where he was before.

Kind of a win win for both sides in this scenario. We need Mixon given the exit of Perine, Mixon needs us because that's probably the best deal he can get.

Bengals to induct Boomer Esiason, Chad Johnson into ring of honor

Two of the Cincinnati Bengals' most popular players are the latest entrants into the franchise's ring of honor.

Former quarterback Boomer Esiason and wide receiver Chad Johnson were selected as this year's class, the team announced Thursday. The pair will be inducted during a ceremony at halftime of the Sept. 25 game against the Los Angeles Rams that will be aired on "Monday Night Football."

With the team's ring of honor still in its early stages, Esiason and Johnson represent just the third class to be recognized. Esiason, who finished his career in 1997, said he was unsure the induction would ever arrive because of the franchise's hesitancy to establish the ring of honor.

Not what you want to see day two of training camp, which appears to be taking place at King's Island.
