Cincinnati Bengals 2014 Thread of Frustration

Can we get a change of the title of this thread to the "...Thread of Misguided, Cautious Optimism"? I cannot believe Dennard fell to #24...he was honestly my favorite CB (Gilbert a close second)...I would have put him as my pick in the first, but I thought there was no way he would slip to there. I have sat through enough drafts to see the guy I want get picked right before the Bengals pick. Cannot believe this played out for us...I promised everyone at my table I would walk out in a fit of cussing rage if we passed him at 24. Glad this team renewed my faith to some extent tonight. I know Dennard is not a savior or anything, but he will at least play some this year and obviously give us a solid piece next to Hall next year after Newman is gone (maybe Jones, maybe he has one more year)...even if Kilpatrick pans out, Dennard will be needed. Even this year, I could see him getting extensive time at the Nickel spot, ideal guy there for now.

And now for that our biggest need is addressed with a big time talent, not sure where we go. I want Mettenberger/McCarron in the 3rd but not really sure in the 2nd. I would love Borland but we need a WILL more than anything...we could wait to round 3 or 4 for that. I would be fine with any of S, DL, OT, or WR depending on who is there in the 2nd. The only reason I say DL is because there are a ton of good ones left...Nix, Jernigan, Hageman, Ealy, Tuitt, etc. I am sure plenty will get taken early in the 2nd, but there should be some bodies left since there was no real run on DL mid-late 1st.

It is good to see there others like me on the BP. So far I am happy with the draft. Got a guy the Bengals needed and Manziel went to Cleveland. I hate that Shazier went to Pittsburgh.

Same here...I hate Pittsburgh and Baltimore WAY more than Cleveland. I would rather see the Ohio teams beat them down and compete for the AFC North title. Manziel will be fun to watch there regardless, I would have no other reason to flip it over to their channel. As for us, we really made out with Dennard, what a steal...smart, physical, and the best cover corner in the draft. Will contribute immediately on special teams at least but could very well be called upon to play some nickel or even boundary. I'm hoping Hall is 100%, Jones picks up where he left off last year, Newman has one more year in him, and Kilpatrick becomes more consistent now that he has shaken off the post-injury rust last season. However, the injury bug tends to hit us there and even if not, this pick was vital for the near future even if it is not this year. Superb pick but really a no-brainer once he fell that far.

that's where they should go then

I would be fine with that I guess. Whitworth is still very good but of course age is a looming concern, plus he can easily slide to LG and give us a stronger interior. I think that Koundijio and Moses will likely be off the board before we pick, but either of Antonio Richardson of Tennesse (who we have shown major interest in) or our boy Mewhort would be there at the end of the 2nd. Mewhort might be there in the 3rd as well though...would love Jack, he can play any position on the OL and excel. Cameron Fleming from Stanford would be solid in the 3rd. However, I am hoping we reserve the 3rd round for a QB unless we think we can get Murray in the 4th. One thing that might stop us from taking a tackle? We picked up Newhouse from GB (could play G or T) and Hawkinson has impressed the coaches at both tackle and guard. Not sure we have any other pressing needs to address, just saying there is a good chance we just take the best player available in the 2nd.

What do we think of drafting a center in the 2nd though? I prefer waiting but then again, we have nobody at center and there are a couple guys with mid-2nd round grades that could possibly step in and start (I like Martin from USC). A line of Whitworth, Boling/Newhouse, Martin, Zeitler, and Smith sounds awfully good to me.

Love getting McCarron in the 5th...incredible value for us there, I think the kid has what it takes to be a good QB in the NFL and his experience at high levels of play makes him even more desirable. I also love moving up to get the center in the 4th (Bodine)...position of need and it is obvious we had a high grade on him, so I am all for being aggressive and getting our guy. Could be the starter right away, that is great value in the 4th.

And although I got upset with the Clarke pick at first blush in the 3rd, he is a player that I that I think fits in extremely well here in Cincy. I also think the Flowers pick in the 6th was great, kid has a lot of potential. Like the 7th round too. Overall I give this draft a B+.

Dalton better than ever

Any difference in Andy Dalton? What would a Bengals list be without starting at the player people can’t stop talking about? Dalton spent a portion of his offseason working with pitching guru and biomechanics expert Tom House, whose become a quarterback whisperer of sorts in recent years. House worked with Drew Brees and Tom Brady.

Word from those around the team has been Dalton looks better than ever and showing more zip on his passes than in any of his previous three seasons. His throwing motion looks compact and cuts valuable hundredths of a second off his delivery. Who knows how much that will mean come January, but for now makes for a nugget worth filing away.
