Cincinnati Bengals 2014 Thread of Frustration

The run defense is noticeably improved with Mauluga in...a liability in pass coverage still but he is filling those gaps that were wide open for the past two games. Get Burfict back and the defense could be decent.

The DL looks fully healthy now (still no pass rush though). Once Burfict is back, the front 7 should at least be stout against the run...wish there was more pass rush but the DBs really do a great job in coverage, even without Newman...and Hall for part of the game. Of course Dalton looked sharp with the spotlight off of him and AJ looks to be back in form. Great job running the ball...OL is doing their part, will help a lot when Gio comes back. On to Houston.

Gio, Andre Smith, and Zeitler were all full go today...should be the healthiest our offense will be all year (unless Eifert can return at some point). And on defense we should have Gilberry and probably Newman back...no Burfict (presumably back for next week against Tampa) and likely no Hunt, but otherwise we are full go on defense. Nice to see we are almost back to full health, a win won't be easy to come by in Houston and we need all hands on board.

Minus Andre probably, reports are he tore his triceps which would end his season and be a really big blow, given how awful Marshall Newhouse has been so far this season.

Getting Burfict back for next week will be good, give him time to get back into the flow in what should be not-too-difficult a game before we have a pretty awful stretch to end the year. The bad news is that the rest of the AFC North has pretty easy schedules to end the year:

  • Pittsburgh: vs. Saints, @ Bengals, @ Falcons, vs. Chiefs, vs. Bengals
  • Cleveland: @ Buffalo, vs. Indy, vs, Bengals, @ Carolina, @ Baltimore
  • Baltimore: @ Saints (tonight), vs. Chargers, @ Dolphins, vs. Jaguars, @ Texans, vs. Browns
Assuming we beat Tampa next week (which kinda scares me but) and lose to Denver in week 16 (it's a primetime game, so that's that), I think we probably need to win 3 out of 3 division games to win the division because I could pretty easily see a scenario where Pittsburgh wins their other 3 games (Saints and Chiefs at home and Atlanta isn't really any good), meaning that they're 10-4 before our games. If they beat us once that puts them at 11-5 and means we're at best 10-5-1 (if you count Denver as a loss). So I think we need to finish 4-1 to ensure ourselves the division, which just seems like a very un-Bengals-esque thing to do.

Really just highlights how big that Carolina tie could loom at the end of the season.
