Not sure why we didn't pay a little more and upgrade to Ginn? :shake: Tate has done ZERO to impress me...fumbles punts and looks stiffer than a board trying to make people miss on punt returns.

:lol: I had forgot all about that one...hard to be exhaustive on his list of shortcomings. We better have paid him next to nothing for his return. I agree with most of the resignings (so long as we get Smith back) but this one makes me scratch my head. Adam Jones is already a great returner (durability issues though) and we can draft another specialist, so it makes no sense even with Ginn off the market now. Oh well, likely didn't give up much for him.

I think FA has been a train wreck, personally. We had the most cap room in the league and an unbelievable need at safety, and there have been some REALLY cheap safety deals that we obviously could have matched. We could have signed any one of Kenny Phillips, Adrian Wilson, or Bernard Pollard for $2.5M/year or less. I personally would have also liked to see us take a run at Dashon Goldson once he got cut - his contract is pretty reasonable and he would have shored up one of the safety spots instantly.

I think going into next year with Maulauga as the starting MIKE is a disaster and as the starting SAM is only slightly less of a disaster. It's only $2.5M guaranteed, but that honestly might still be overpaying considering how terrible he was last year.

The Andre Smith contract (assuming it gets done) will be really interesting. If we get him for the same as the Pats just paid Vollmer (which we should, considering that Smith is just slightly worse than Vollmer) then I'll be pretty happy. However, given the fact that its the Bengals and they're the Pats, I bet we pay Smith $6M more, which will mean FA as a whole to me is a loss.

Somehow not resigning Smith would be such an unbelievably terrible outcome that I can't even begin to fathom it.

I'm just beating the shit out of a real dead horse, but Michael Huff, 3 years $6M. Another good, veteran safety for $2M a year that by all reports we didn't even inquire on.

I'd feel way more confident that this was us deciding veterans weren't the route to go if I hadn't lived through so many years of Mike Brown refusing to spend money, period.

Bengals claim John Skelton

The Bengals acquired quarterback John Skelton off waivers from the Cardinals on Wednesday, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy. The Bengals lost the backup quarterback they had used over the past two seasons, Bruce Gradkowski, to the Steelers in free agency shortly after the beginning of the new league year. They then signed Josh Johnson, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns as Andy Dalton's new backup. The addition of Skelton will add some competition at the reserve position because it's unlikely that both he and Johnson will make the final roster. Skelton was a fifth-round pick in 2010 by the Cardinals out of Fordham. He has only played in 20 games during his three years in the league, starting 17 of them.

The Johnson pickup I like but this is stupid. Guy is a proven bust...are we just planning on drafting a 4th or 5th rounder to have him compete with Skelton?

Kinda vital...this OL is crazy tough if they get him back. If BJGE can do what he did, I am pretty sure whoever we bring in through the draft will be able to some serious damage at RB, especially if we can get another threat at WR.

Harrison would be a huge pickup and an upgrade over Lawson. Plus it would clear up the draft picture since presumably Burfict, Mauluga, and Harrison would be the starters. It would leave the first three picks in Rounds 1 and 2 to go safety, receiver, and running back (in whatever order we want depending on who is available). However, I would prefer we go in that respective order...I think we can get a steal with our last 2nd round pick at RB. Now if we keep messing around and don't resign Smith, we might have to use one of those picks on a tackle...

Also I like the Bernard Scott resigning...gives us much more flexibility on who we draft at RB (assuming he comes back strong from injury).
