Cincinnati Bengals (2013 Season)

Agree with Bucknut24, not disappointed with the Harrison signing per se but much prefer Dansby for a few reasons:

  • He's an ILB, which presumably could allow us to shift Maualuga to the outside where hopefully he won't be such a huge train wreck
  • He graded out better than Harrison last season (+6.0 vs +2.9, although he did play 3 more games) and is 3 years younger
  • I'm a little nervous about Harrison's ability to play a 4-3 OLB spot, considering he's only ever really been an 3-4 rush linebacker (not too different, but enough)
I would also love to see us sign either of Kerry Rhodes or Quintin Mikell (would prefer Rhodes). Both are veteran safeties that had really good years last year and could probably be had on pretty cheap 1 or 2 year deals. Sign one of them, draft a safety in the first and worst case you've got a high quality back up.

But this is the Bengals, so best case we overpay drastically for Harrison.

Agreed with all of that but I think the staff might want his leadership more than anything, though it sacrifices the longevity we could get from Dansby. My biggest concern would be the 3-4 to a 4-3 transition as well, although he would add to an already potent pass rush...on passing situations, we would likely be looking at Johnson and Dunlap outside, Atkins and Geathers/Gilberry on the inside. Add Harrison to the mix and the pass rush could be scary.

I don't get why people are still wanting Maualuga to start....he is terrible, i'd go as far to say he was one of the worst starting LBers in the NFL last season

I would rather have *insert random mid round rookie here* in there then him at this point

Completely agree with the above, I would much prefer that we not have re-signed him, and I think him starting the season as our MLB is an unmitigated disaster. However, we resigned him for enough money that we're obviously planning on him starting for us at this point and, given that, I think he has the potential to be a serviceable 2 down OLB. Therefore, at this point, I want us to sign someone (like Dansby) who could make that transition possible.

Hopefully we draft a couple of LBs in this draft as well, and one of them can push Maualuga for the starting job if we don't replace him before that point.

If Vaccaro is gone I want Ogletree to play OLB. Then we could grab Elam early two and maybe Franklin or someone late two. This is assuming we resign the other Tubby Smith.

I like that plan...I have Vaccaro 1a and Ogletree 1b on my list. There is always a possibility neither are available though and I personally like either Justin Hunter or Robert Woods at WR either with the 1st or early 2nd...I'm not convinced we have any real talent past Green at the #2 WR spot, albeit that Sanu and Marvin Jones showed some promise in their rookie seasons.

Either way you slice it, the defense is almost all in tact and likely improved if Harrison or Dansby happen, so there needs to be a healthy focus on offense with the first three picks. Ideally, I would love to see this scenario unfold (also assuming we resign Smith):

1st: Vaccaro-Safety
2nd: Woods/Hunter-WR
2nd: Montee Ball/Leveon Bell- RB (I think Lacy was more a product of his OL, he is a reach late first/early 2nd imo)
3rd: Arthur Brown/Kasheeme Green- LB

Again, I'd be much more convinced that this was the Bengals making the smart financial decision to not overpay for a middling, aging linebacker, if I hadn't lived through 15 years of us not signing free agents because Mike Brown is so cheap.

Bengals and former Steelers LB James Harrison continue talking, but as one source texted, "Does not look like the numbers will work."

of course they're [censored]ing it up

:shake::shake::shake: C'mon...a 1 year contract is not going to break the bank, especially when we need his leadership at the position. I'm only ok with this in the event we get Dansby.

Dansby is gonna be more expensive, that's why they went after Harrison, he's the cheaper option

Yeah...honestly, Harrison makes more sense to me. Bring him in for a year with an option to renew. Gives leadership to Burfict and allows us to bring in a LB fairly early in the draft to learn/develop behind Harrison and Mauluga (and step in for him if need be). I was never a fan of bringing Mauluga back but those are the cards we are dealt with.

Mike Mayock had some things to say about Ogletree that were not very positive. Said he looks like a safety trying to figure it out at LB. Said he watched all the tape on Ogletree and he cannot figure out why people think he is a 1st rounder. That coupled with the DUI makes me think we should look elsewhere for LBs. I am with you, I want a safety.
