Chris Holtzmann is what he is. To quote Bill Parcells: "You are what your record says you are". Look at his coaching record (below); Holtzmann usually ends up in the middle of the "conference pack". He's a mediocre coach and recruiter. If he ever wins a conference championship it will be an anomaly and he'll probably never get to the "Final Four" let alone win a National Championship. On the positive side; I believe that he runs a clean program and won't (knowingly) get any NCAA violations. His best year at Ohio State was his 1st season here when he had Thad Matta's players and he has gone downhill since then.

College recruiting has changed on the past few years with NIL. I have no idea if Holtzmann has enough Ohio State basketball NIL money to compete with the "big boys" schools or not, etc. It would be interesting to know how much NIL money Ohio State is obligating to basketball compared to what other basketball programs like UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Arizona, etc get.

Needless to say, The Ohio State football program seems to have adequate NIL resources to compete with the "big boys" by 1) getting top 5 recruiting classes, 2) getting some top line players out of the transfer portal to fill specific needs, and 3) keeping some really good Juniors from declaring for the draft (i.e in school for another year), etc.

Here’s a clue… I haven’t watched an OSU basketball game in 3 years.

They’re simply unwatchable.

I can’t stand their style of play and I can’t stand Holtmann.

Honestly, the women's team is far more fun to watch. Full court pressure all night, passing, ball movement, not just guys playing hero ball.

Man I really like the guy. He's a hell of an ambassador for the university and the students seem to love him. It's hard not to root for him and he's been recruiting like a fiend lately.

That all ends though once the tip happens and they all go full retard for some reason. The Buck stops at the top so it's not defendable anymore. This isnt the place for him evidently.

OK, I'm completely on the Fire Holtman train now. Road game against the worst team in the conference is exactly what you NEED to win to bounce back and refocus the team. Unacceptable to not get it done. Barring a miracle (make it to the B10 championship game and Elite 8), I. AM. FUCKING...DONE!
Yeah, I came into this thread to say the same thing. Sleeping on it for 24 hours made me even more pissed after the clarity of that loss. There's nothing but a B1G championship/Tourney run to salvage this one.
Beyond time to move on. Can’t defend the results his teams are delivering. Back-to-back years of strong starts and the team frosts over in B1G play. So many things he’s missing as a major program coach and will never have.
It has been rinse, wash, repeat and there is no reason to believe it will ever change. It is seriously the same shit every year. As you said, well past the time that we cut our losses but the lurch with Gene is very real...highly doubt he pulls the trigger on terminating CH, but that is absolutely what should happen or maybe Gene can make an early exit so the new AD can do the dirty work.

OHIO STATE MEN'S BASKETBALL IS BAD IN JANUARY, AGAIN. IT IS WHO THEY ARE UNDER CHRIS HOLTMANN

144964_h.jpg

Against Michigan on Monday, Ohio State played reasonably well in the second half, outscoring a pretty bad Wolverine team (by, uh... one), and showing that they were potentially better coached and more talented.

All of that was, of course, negated by a terrible first half in which the Buckeyes couldn't hit a three to save their lives and ultimately ended down by nine. For the game, Chris Holtmann's squad had a grand total of eight assists, shot less than 38% from the field, a number which includes going just 3/25 from the three-point line.

I'm certainly not an X's and O's kind of guy when it comes to basketball. The thing goes into the hoop or it doesn't and my lizard brain extrapolates "good" or "bad" from that. Anything beyond that simple act is about three shades too complicated for yours truly; I just want the Ohio State men's basketball team to win basketball games.

But, throughout Chris Holtmann's tenure as Ohio State's head coach, they have been consistently terrible at doing so halfway through the season.

In 2018-9, the Buckeyes lost six of seven, including five in a row, from January 5th through the 29th. The year after, Ohio State lost six of seven, including four in a row, from December 29th through January 23rd. In 2020-1, they lost four in a row from late February through early March. And last season, of course, Holtmann's crew epically tanked for literally the entirety of January and February, losing 14 of 15 games on streaks of five and nine losses.

AND NOW, AGAIN, THEY ARE ON ANOTHER LOSING STREAK IN JANUARY.
